October 13, 200322 yr Well here goes, not to sound to stupid or anything but check out the pic below - Why is it that the display doesn't show properly. Should'nt it belined up straight up and down? Im tracking it perfectly but yet it looks sideways. Can someone explain and tell me if this can be corrected? I've always wanted to ask this question but always thought it was too dumb. lol :-haloThankshttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/42685.jpg
October 13, 200322 yr Commercial Member Hi AnthonyThe reason is that you have not dialed in your inbound approach course on the VOR course selector. (on the MCP, Just to the left of the A/T arm switch) It indicates 000 when you are flying a heading of 271. Hope this helpsRegardsPaul GollnickTechnical Operations/Customer Operational SupportPrecision Manuals Development Groupwww.precisionmanuals.com Paul Gollnick Manager Customer/Technical Support Precision Manuals Development Group www.precisionmanuals.com

October 13, 200322 yr Another dumb questionWhy is the airplane flying heading 271 while course of 000 is selected?A real airplane will not fly this way. (asked a 737NG pilot)Regards
October 13, 200322 yr >Another dumb question>>Why is the airplane flying heading 271 while course of 000 is>selected?>A real airplane will not fly this way. (asked a 737NG pilot)>>RegardsActually, while a real 737NG probably wouldn't fly this way, many other autopilots will - here's why:A simple autopilot in approach mode will only look at the deviation bars, and does not pay any attention to a course selector or heading bug, IF (and only if) the approach mode is selected with the bars reasonably close to centered. Only if the bar is close to full deflection does the autopilot try to figure out a course intercept, and that needs the course and heading information.Since the autopilot in FS isn't that bright, if you were to fly an LNAV path and then engage VOR/LOC or APP when you're on the localizer, an intercept angle isn't really needed. As another piece of trivia, when flying an ILS by hand, once I cross the final approach fix, my scan is mostly AI, altitude, and the needles, and I'm not really paying any attention to my heading - it's a simple "bar left, go left" type of routine - just like the autopilot.
