Wing and Engine Anti-Ice

Featured Replies

Hello I was just wondering what is the standard proceedure for the Engine and Wing anti-ice in the 737's at cruise with no clouds or precip? (Temps below +10)ThanksJason http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/checkcapt.jpg

I am aware of the requirements for Alaska Airlines 737 OPSLEVEL FLIGHTEng AI - ONWing AI - ONContinous exposure to visible moisture expected to exceed 3 minutes with OAT indication between 11 to -40

CPU: Core i5-6600K 4 core (3.5GHz) - overclock to 4.3 | RAM: (1066 MHz) 16GB
MOBO: ASUS Z170 Pro |  GeForce GTX 1070 8GB | MONITOR: 2560 X 1440 2K

Anti-ice is to be selected on at any time you are operating in Icing Conditions.Icing Conditions: Flight in visible moisture (generally considered to be a visibilty limited to 1 statute mile or less) and a Total Air Temp of less than 10 degrees C but greater than -40 degreesC in climb or crz or at any temp when on DES. This is for Engine Anti-Ice.Wing anti ice is applied in flight as and when required by the pilot (look at teh wing) except when operating Engine Anti-Ice on teh ground at which time Wing Anti-Ice must also be selected on.Please note that Wing Anti-Ice will switch off automatically when advancing teh Thrust Levers for takeoff. This of any help?Rgds,Brad Marsh

Hello Brad,You say Wing Anti-Ice will switch off automatically when advancing the Thrust Levers for takeoff, but should you then manually turn them on again right after t/o if icing conditions exist - ie the temp is below 10 but greater than -40 and visible moisture is present? Thanks in advance,

Richard,If you are in icing conditions you should turn them on again. I guess the reason for the WAI to trip during T/O is not to loose too much thrust during take-off and climb-out.Cheers,

Hi Mats,OK, so that would mean it's OK to turn them on again right after takeoff...maybe as an additional step in the 'after t/o' flow? Or should you wait until a certain point until you switch them on again?Cheers,

Hmmm...That's a very good question! I actually don't know but I would suspect you wouldn't turn it ON until after second segment climb or maybe as late as when clean. Second segment climb is between gear retraction and 400 feet and is supposed to be the most limiting on the NG.Any real world driver care to shed some light on the issue?Cheers,

Thanks Mats, and yes...it would be interesting to hear what a real NG driver has to say on this topic...Brad or Kris...are you there...;-)?

The following quesiton is easy so I think people other than our ever helpful real-world drivers might "land" me a hand. On the ground, after engine start is the operaiton of wing and/or engine anti-ice prohibited? And during takeoff, will the engine anti-ice auto-shut-off as well?http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/800driver.jpgHad forgotten to sign. Cheers, Victor

Hi Victor,Correct me someone if I'm wrong, but no...according to what Brad says a couple of posts up in this thread, wing and/or engine anti-ice is not prohibited on the ground after engine startup. The other way around, you SHOULD use engine anti-ice when on the ground if icing conditions exist and whenever you use engine anti-ice on the ground you should always also use wing anti-ice. And no...as far as I know it's only the wing anti-ice that switches itself off automatically on t/o thrust.Cheers,
