July 7, 200421 yr How does one fly the back beam on an ILS in the 737 NG?There is no mode for it and when I try to fool VOR/LOC mode it turns around.Thanks.
July 8, 200421 yr Em..?Every plane I have flown in FS2004 and in TRI Fly had a BC Hold, even the Cessna. Ok, so the DC3 and vintage ones dont but...Surely there must be a back course hold in a 737? I mean at least 60% of UK airports have a procedural turn approach, flying out on the back beam, then a 60/240 or 80/260 turn.I would like to hear from any of our real world pilots on this. Do you honestly have to fly the back course by hand?Later I will try, flipping the ILS course around and seeing if it will follow it that way.
July 8, 200421 yr Which model? 6/700 or 8/900?If 8/900 - did you apply the interim update (pinned post at the top)?Remember - the search function of these forums is quite helpful, it took me less than 1 minute to find the answer....S Cheers, Søren DissingIntel i9-13900K @5.6-5.8 Ghz | ASUS ROG RYUJIN III | ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 OC | ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero | 64Gb DDR5 @5600 | 1Tb Samsung M.2 980 PRO (Win11), 1Tb Samsung M.2 980 PRO, | ASUS ROG Helios 601 | 32” ASUS PG32UCDM 240hz 4K | Chaseplane | TM TCA Captain's Edition, Winwing FCU + EFIS L/R, Tobii 5 | Win 11 Pro 64 | MSFS 2024 | BA Virtual | PSXT, RealTraffic w/ AIG models
July 8, 200421 yr Make sure that you have the new temporary update installed this has been said to fix the problem of the back course not tracking. ________________________________________________________________________________ Jeremy 9800X3D OC'd -30 +200MHZ | 64GB CL30 RAM | RTX 5080 | Windows 11 23H2| Bravo Throttle | Alpha Yoke | CH Pedals | Logitech Radio Panel | SmoothTrack | AAO

There is NO BC or REV mode. One tunes the localizer frequency, sets the CDI to the front course, and monitors the raw data to be sure that the FMS isn't leading you astray.
July 8, 200421 yr Thanks for the tip regarding the updates.Regarding the FMC waypoints for approaches...My 2 local airports dont have any SIDs or STARs, however they do have transitions which are not in the FMC, I am more than capable of writing the proceedures into the FMC database, but... I "like" flying them with standard radio nav. Both are QDM arcs from the south east and straight to hold over airport and back beam proceedural turn from there.Even if I do programme then, the FMC deleted waypoints out as you pass them, so you can't link the MP up to the start of the appropriate transition, or can you?Surely in the real plane there is a back up, radio navigation way of following the BC? Please tell me its FMC or nothing. Plesae.
July 8, 200421 yr >Surely in the real plane there is a back up, radio navigation>way of following the BC? Please tell me its FMC or nothing. >Plesae.>>What is MP? here in the states it's Manifold Pressure, not really relevant for flying a jet.In the real plane, the backup is the pilot watching the PFD or ND HSI display and seeing that the localizer is tracking properly, and being ready to hand-fly the approach.you can also fly it in LNAV and VS. Automatic lateral flight guidance for this is always LNAV.Once and finally, there is NO autopilot provision for reverse sensing.
July 8, 200421 yr I meant MA, not MP, for missed approach."Once and finally, there is NO autopilot provision for reverse sensing."Strange, why did they decide they didn't need it in the NG?Here's another thing. The 2 FMCs must have matching versions of software dont they? So when one fails due to a software defect, the other one will do exactly the same thing. I wonder how they get round that little gem?For what it's worth, asking, do they have a non electrical Altimeter even?

They are loaded and flown the same way as any other non-precision approach, in LNAV and with the operator's approved method for vertical guidance. Monitoring the raw navaid data for LOC, VOR, and NDB approaches is typically required.
