October 17, 200421 yr I love the plane but cannot land it using the autopilot. Have spent 2 days trying to work out what I am doing wrong. I follow the tutorial exactly but the approach mode just disconnects itself almost as soon as the plane finds the glideslope. Then it will not reconnect and I am in a bad position to land manually. It is so frustrating for me and I am not going to spend hours on this; can someone tell me what I am missing please? Thanks John Hewson

If you are on the ILS with your first A/P and the display says " Single Channel" , and have the 2nd Nav radio also tuned to the ILS Freq, wait until you start down the G/S and switch on the 2nd A/P. Make sure that the 2nd VOR switch is on. The G/S on the display should change to " Flare". Now just sit and wait.
October 17, 200421 yr Author Hi Bob; thanks for the reply. The steps I am doing are as follows:-1) On approach set 2000 ft to intercept glideslope2) Check both radios tuned in to ILS frequency3) At 2000 and on final inrtercept course click APP in the FMC4) Apply AP2 once on glideslope. The plane pitches down every time but after a couple of hundred feet everything is interrupted and I get a CWP messagee in yellow on the annunciator and the plane levels off; disconnects "APP" and automatically changes the setting in the FMC to "VOR LOC". I try to reapply APP but every time I do the autoland kicks out and the plane levels off.I am beginning to wonder if I am setting the plane up properly in the beginning because this is very odd behaviour and doesnt happen in any other aircraft that I fly. Normally when one engages autoland thats it. John Hewson
October 17, 200421 yr Things that have thrown off my auto-lands:- high crosswinds- heavy wake (if you have ActiveSky 2004 and land right behind a 747 for example)- overweight fuel (to heavy for landing)- nav radios 1 and 2 not dialed to the same localizer- incorrect capture altitude- late capture (too close/too high)- app mode not engaged- CMD1 and CMD2 not engaged above min alt (2500 AGL?)- VREF not set in FMCAlso, I would try a different airport just in case the problem is with the ILS in your scenery - that's happened to me before. Hope this helps,
October 17, 200421 yr Author Well just tried everything suggested and still got problems; every single landing I do at any airport is interrupted and I get a yellow message in the annunciator box CWS P which I cannot find referenced anywhere except it is something to do with collision warning, What collision warning I ask myself? I am on a normal glideslope and have no traffic installed at all.Whole thing driving me mad. Espeical;ly as until the last mment everything works perfectly well. John Hewson
October 17, 200421 yr Mr Whole thing driving me mad. Espeical;ly as until the last mment everything works perfectly well,Please take a minute to read the forum rules. You need to sign your posts with your real name. ;-)What is your speed at A/P disconnect? What modes does the A/P report to you in the PFD FMA area? You are not touching the trim are you? If so the A/P will disengage. Force feedback joystick?CWS P stands for Control Wheel Steering - Pitch. If you have the 800/900 it's described on page 9-7 in chapter 09 Automation and TCAS. Basically it's an A/P mode where you input pitch and roll commands to the A/P using the yoke.A screen shot of your main panel and especially the MCP and the PFD when your A/P disconnect would be nice. October 17, 200421 yr Author As you can see I am relatively new to these forums and apologies for not signing my name properly.Anyway I think I found the solution by checking another thread - again sorry to bother you all before I did this properly and second apology in order.Followed a thread about steep dives after disconnection from the AP and realised that I have been touching the controls during descent; I have completed my first completely autoland approach by learning to be patient and keep my hands off the joystick or other controls. Plane landed within 10 ft of its correct position. Lets hope I can repeat this!My thanks to one and all. Hope this is now sorted.John Hewson John Hewson

You didn't do that :)

October 17, 200421 yr I forgot (or maybe didn't read it exactly) in my previous post..You wrote you hit the APP button when on intercept course.. try this:when on intercept course to the localizer hit VORLOC and let the autopilot catch the localizer.. when the glideslope (you should try to enter it form below to avoid steep dives) turn on A/P B and switch to APP mode.. then the autopilot should have the localizer on A/P A and the glideslope on A/P B (or vice versa..). You will notice the flags VORLOC and G/S on the PFD..:-)HTH & RegardsGerhard Brunner
