does vnav and lnav work without autopilot

hi i have just upgraded to the 737/800/900,if i have programmed the fmc, does vnav and lnav work without switching on autopilot or does the autopilot have to be on before vnav and lnav mode engage. thanks jim

I believe... someone correct me if I'm wrong. That when you hit LNAV and VNAV, and then activate the FD, the FD will guide you along to the VNAV and LNAV paths, when you engage A/P, all it does is follow the FD.

Hi,that's all correct, except that you have to switch the F/Ds ON before you switch ON any MCP mode.
