Cross Wind Landing Help

Featured Replies

Hi folks,I've been flying the PIC767 for a while now, but I'm still not able to perform a descent cross wind landing when the wind is above 10kts. I don't have peddles and a yoke, yet. Perhaps my wife will pick up on my subtle hints for a x-mas gift. For know I'm stuck with my MS Sidewinder twist stick.I would appreciate it if someone could point me towards a tutorial for cross wind landings. I am turning off the Right Yaw Damper and trying to stay lined up on the rwy with rudder/role control, but I always seem to get blown too far downwind and have trouble getting lined back up again.Do you try to keep the wings level and just use rudder control or do you drop the wing into the wind? What is the maximum cross wind component that you should try landing with?Any help would be greatly appreciated!

WOW! I can't get over the spelling/grammer mistakes in my posting. Of course it's older thank 60 mins so I can't edit it. What can I say? It was late, I was tired and I'd just made a really crummy landing. :-)

If I face a crosswind landing challenge I do the following... although its a lot bumpier in a Katana then a 767 =)Wing down into the windKeep the nose pointed at the runway (use rudder)Keep the plane levelled out as much as you can... don't over compensate either. When you do touch down keep the plane straight. Keep the ailerons in the same configuration as you had them on approach... that will keep your wing thats on the windy side from forcing your aircraft to one side of the runway.I know thats probably as clear as mud... send me a note for clarification =) Doing it is one thing, explaining it is another.Dan [email protected]

Muff,Practice. There are some other things to think about like your flap settings and power settings - but Dan has it in a nutshell. It is totally do-able with a twist stick, I flew with one for years until I picked up a yoke and pedals (highly recommended) - also look back in the forum regarding your rudder effectiveness settings. From what I remember..For Dampers on you want effectiveness = 4.For Dampers off you want effectiveness = 24.It's not an easy thing to master, especially for those of us who have never done it in a real aircraft. I had a great crosswind coming into KORD yesterday evening... so much fun .Ian.

Sound like the key is to keep at it then. I think the problem may have been that I was trying to keep the wings level and just use the rudder control to stay lined up. I'll try another one this evening with the wing dropped.I'll have a look for the posts on the rudder effectiveness setting as well. I have disabled the MSFS AutoRudder Coordination in the settings is this correct? Thanks for the replies!

oh come on side slips are fun... in GA at least =)

OK. Wings level, crab into the wind. Check my rudder effectiveness settings.Do you turn off both Yaw Dampers for landing or just the right one?Should I have the AutoRudder Coordination in the MSFS settings disabled? Or is this automatically toggled off and on by the right yaw damper? In a 19kt crosswind (like the one that ruined my landing last night :-)), should I be able to hold it straight with just the rudder?

1. Adjust heading to hold center line "crab"2. Wings level3. Both dampers "OFF" if your rudder effectiveness is set at 44. Damper positions "ON" if your rudder effectiveness is set at 245. Turn off the MSFS auto coordination - "always"6 You do not use rudder inputs till you have cut power and started your flare, then gently use the rudder to kick around the tail and set down aligned with the runway.Piece of cake!(The left Yaw damper does not really do anything that I can tell)(Ian, think you had those effectiveness numbers listed backwards)

>3. Both dampers "OFF" if your rudder effectiveness is set at >4 >4. Damper positions "ON" if your rudder effectiveness is set >at 24 >(Ian, think you had those effectiveness numbers listed >backwards) DOH!!I deed.. I deed...Ian.

Can anyone tell me where to set the rudder effectiveness~~THANK U!

I set mine to 4 (it's 1 by default). Now I have much more rudder control with the Yaw Dampers off.

The Rudder Effectiveness setting is located in the PIC aircraft.cfg file.

That link is forbidden Mike.

All the best!
