Autoland - in the wrong direction - help!

Featured Replies

Help. Something has gone dreadfully wrong. I am flying the POSKY Merged PIC767 on a practice flight using just the MCP. I setup for an ILS approach and capture the localiser/glideslope. After being on the glideslope for a short while I select APP and all three A/P's. PIC767 immediately turns the aircraft in the opposite direction and then commences an approach to some mythical airfield almost 180 degrees from the one I want. It fly's a glideslope that does not exist and indicates FLARE etc as though it were actually on an approach. On my last attenpt, I just left it alone and it happily landed in some paddock - including the flare. So what could have gone wrong. Appart from the POSKY merge the only other software I have introduced is the SERVINFO instrument onto the PIC panel. I am really scared to venture into VATSIM territory with this kind of behaviour. Any help would be really appreciated.Cheers Mike

Hey Mike,One thing I can think of is that the heading in the CRS (course) window should match the runway heading of the runway you intend to land on.I used to think that this setting did not matter, it was only set to the actual heading so the needle on the HSI was straight up to aid in lining up for the approach (maybe that's true on other aircraft). If you have the FMC set up for an ILS runway, the freq. and runway heading should automatically change for you. If not, click the VOR/DME off of AUTO and put in manual, then set the freq and heading as appropriate.Let me know if that was it.Regards,Steve Dra

Thanks SteveThat was a good spot. I did have my CRS set to 000 and as soon as I set that to runway heading it all came back. It does not put me precisely in the runway (which it used to) but close enough so that I can pick it up myself somewhere near decision height and hand fly the remainder. Many thanks. Cheers Mike

Check the perf init page of the FMC - given that u had selected a destination runway, this page will show u the ILS freq and published OBS. Just tune the OBS before capture, early during app phase.Ilan

Thanks IlanI will review that next flight. I am going to have to get the manual out again and start over. Cheers Mike

Hey Mike,Another cool thing about FSNav is the you can place your cursor over the end of a runway you wish to land on and it will give you everything you need to now about it...Length, width, altitude, and best of all (and in our case) the ILS freq and actual heading of the runway (because we all know that a runway 27 may actually be 273 degress). :)Also, instead of turning a knob to put the freq. in, you can drag and drop the freq. from the end of the runway to a nav box in FSNav and it will tune the radio for you...pretty nice, since I'm always transposing numbers! :)Now, some may say that this is not very realistic, but then again neither is flying a 767 with a single pilot. :) I just rationalize my shortcuts as things the first officer would normally do anyway. :)Regards,Steve Dra

Hehe, No problem Stiff. As long as the vor is not set to AUTO, you can drag and drop freqs. in there. It also works great on other aircraft as well.Regards,Steve Dra

Hi MikeApart from ensuring CRS is correctly set you state: >> After being on the glideslope for a short while I select APP and all three A/P's <

Thanks Paul.Yep, I actually tried that once before. I got PIC767 somewhere near the ILS and just pushed all the buttons then went and made a cuppa tea. By the time I got back she had put herself down far better than I could have done. It was as though she was saying... "I can do this perfectly adequately without any help from you Mike - thank you" and I think she was right! Those color suggestions are useful. I noticed when my bird was misbehaving on the approach that the LOC and G/S where White and not Green. That should have been a clue for me. Now where is that manual...Cheers Mike
