August 21, 200322 yr Hi all, I was just wondering if there is a patch so that N1 displays idle thrust for the descent yet. I know that I could disengage the autothrottle and bring the levers back manually but this kind of defeats the purpose. Also, I see that there is a patch so that you can taxi without having to increase N1 up until about 60%. Are there any problems with this patch? As in does the aeroplane still burn the same amount of fuel etc or is there some penalty ?Thanks again and happy landings
August 22, 200322 yr I know of no patch so that N1 displays idle thrust for descent when power is actually being used. I note you say "displays" rather than actually using idle thrust. I am no programmer but I think it would be pretty tough to modify the N1 display logic so that it displays idle during a descent when power is actually be used.If you really meant the use of idle thrust, then there is no fix. Thereason power is used (i.e not at idle as it would be in the real aircraft)is because (as I understand it) Microsoft screwed up the atmospheric modelling in FS and if you descend at idle (not just in PIC but in any other aircraft as well) you get an unrealistically high descent rate. Idle thrust at normal scheduled speeds gives you about twice, if not more, of the descent rate you should have. Hence, some power is used to provide a more realistic descent profile. The effect becomes less apparent below 10000 ft however it is still there. Typical jet transport descent rates at idle arearound 2000 fpm (a little higher at high altitude and a little less at lower altitudes).I have the taxi patch installed and have not noticed any adverse affects elsewhere with the aircraft performance. The fuel flow will be artificially high, however (related to unrealistic MS modelling of the rolling friction I imagine). I guess you get your choice of unrealistic taxi N1 or unrealistic taxi fuel flowAll that to say, sorry, no fix to the phenomenon you have observed.Kevin in CYOW

The>fuel flow will be artificially high, however (related to>unrealistic MS modelling of the rolling friction I imagine). >I guess you get your choice of unrealistic taxi N1 or>unrealistic taxi fuel flowWell, without the idle taxi patch, you get both unrealistically high N1 AND unrealistically high fuel flow, a fuel flow rate that matches the higher thrust as opposed to a true idle thrust fuel flow. With the patch, it is possible to taxi with idle thrust, however fuel flow is still unrealistically high. Fuel burn in the air is not affected by the patch. So there really isn't a downside to the patch, in my opinion.Ryan
August 22, 200322 yr My only issue with the taxi thrust patch is that at idle power there seems to be/is a lot more thrust than before the patch...this is very noticeable on final approach and when trying to slow down in the descent as compared to the original set up. I assume the thrust is higher so that you can taxi at idle thrust while overcoming MS's sticky tarmac, inertia calcs, or whatever. It is nice to taxi at idle, but the added power in the descent and approach is not appreciated or closer to "real" IMHO. I have removed the taxi patch for these reasons...I am a bit of a purist when it comes to PIC767 flight/aircraft dynamics, call me crazy. I just load some extra fuel for the taxi, end of problem.Rob.

August 22, 200322 yr hi Daryl,Assuming you installed the taxi thrust mod (a zip on the avsim library) using Air Ed...you need to un-do what you did, there is no uninstall feature. The text in the d/load says it "should not affect flight dynamics", but I have found that it most certainly does.If you did not mess with your air file, then there is nothing to change back to.Clear as mud.Rob.
August 23, 200322 yr I would assume that anyone making changes to their 767 Pilot in Command Wilco Publishing.air file would have backed up the original first, so take this as a reminder to keep the original backed up and in a safe place so to avoid the possability of a complete re-install of PIC as it's near impossible to remember all the original numbers to revert back to in the taxi thrust modification or any other mod for that matter.Regards,Van LatendresseYeoDesigns/AFG groupPanel/FDE Designer
August 23, 200322 yr And here I am, too oblivious to realize that the taxi patch affected the thrust on final approach...I guess I'd just become used to the high thrust on final because I was flying Iz's 757 for awhile.Ryan
August 24, 200322 yr This is most strange.I have NOT seen any effect of the taxi-mod in air.If I recall right, the mod was done in such a manner, that the increased thrust was available only upto 30 kts of GS, so obviously it is not available during approach (or maybe with a slightly lighter a/c :D)... but seriously, it does not affect performance in air!Tero PPL(A)
