November 14, 200322 yr First, I hope this is the right forum for this question.Has anyone had any success running roger wilco on a laptop while flying FS2002/4 on another PC? The reason why I'm asking is because I want to run Roger Wilco on a different PC then the flight sim so I can free up some CPU and make communications cleaner on RW. I use serverinfo and can log onto some ATC but not all. Some "join" buttons are not available for many ATC. So I guess my real question is, do the two PC's need to be networked? or is there a way to hear all ATC w/RW on Serverinfo?Presario
November 14, 200322 yr AFAIK You need FSUIPC and Widefs to allow two-way communication between your PC and laptop as well as networking them. Then you can run SB, RW, and any weather program on the laptop and leave the PC to just run FS.Having said all that RW will run on the laptop (as you have found out) and I would expect it to be able to connect to any voice ATC.However I have only tried it on Vatsim with 2 PCs as outlined in the first sentence.HTH
November 15, 200322 yr HTHThanks for the reply, and I figured I needed to network my Laptop and desktop together. Now the only challenge is to figure out how to do that. My current setup is - cable modem to router- desktop hard wired and laptop is wireless. When I try to run the network wizard throught the desktop I get a "this computer can not be networked" error. Is there special cable needed other than standard ethernet cable? Anyhow I probable won't need to network the two together if all ATC where available through servering and RW on the laptop. As I stated above the only way I know how to join a ATC through RW on a PC not running SB is through the serverinfo program, choosing "select mode" and then clicking on the "join" button of the ATC you select. However as I also stated not all ATC have the "join" button available, many are grayed out and not selectable. So I guess I'm stuck with either figuring out how to network the two PC's or figuring out how to join all available (voice capable) ATC through RW on my laptop...Presario
November 15, 200322 yr Actually the name is Vulcan not HTH :D , 'HTH' stands for 'Hope that helps' :-)OK, ServInfo and RW. A number of RW cahnnels do not have the 'join' button enabled to prevent idiots from joining and being a real PITA and preventing others from enjoying good ATC.My advice is to join RW the 'official' way via SB.Onto networking.I have no experience with wireless laptops but if it has no Ethernet connection then the only way I know to connect it to a network is through some sort of wireless transmitter either plugged into your router or desktop. If the laptop does have an Ethernet connection then the easiest way is to run a UTP cable from the laptop to the router, normally this would be a straight through cable not a cross-over one, but check on your router just to make sure.I assume the desktop is already connected to the router. If you don't want to network the laptop, or can't, then you should be able to join a RW server/room by connecting via SB and then looking at the address given in the controller's ATIS and entering that into the RW 'join' box.It may look something like89.56.10.23/egnx_v_twrOravsim.rw.com/egnx_v_twrJust enter the whole lot into RW, click 'join' and that should connect you.Again HTH
November 16, 200322 yr LOL, sorry Vulcan (aka HTH) as you can see I'm not hip to this lingo man.. :)Thanks for your help, I'll work on networking my PC and Laptop together, I think I'll head to the local PC store and ask them what I need specifically for my setup. That should take care of that problem; of course only to create 10X more issues when I actually attempt to work FS2002/PIC767/SB/activeskys/RW together on two PC's..:(thankspresario (aka jim

November 24, 200322 yr Hi Vulcan,Well I've come a long way, I have my Desktop and Laptop connected via an internet gateway (router) and have file sharing between the two. I have a registered copy of FSUIPC and WideFS and followed the instructions on installing WideFS on the Desktop (running FS) and the laptop (running activesky) but have the following problem.I edited the wideclient.ini file to find the correct server IP address but the "WideClient FS98 Eliminator window just says "waiting for a connection"? I have both PC's on but no connection. This is the message the error log file gives me 60 Attempting to connect now 21000 Error on client pre-Connection Select() [Error=10060] Connection timed out 21000 Ready to try connection again 21040 Attempting to connect nowI could wait till the cows come home but it never connects? any ideas?presario
November 25, 200322 yr Just in case you have missed the obvious Jim, Wideclient will onlt get a connection once FS is running. You don't mention that in your post so not sure if it was running. In the meantime I'll check if there are any other obvious problems.Rgds
November 25, 200322 yr Hello VulcanI figured out the problem, I had a firewall up and running in the background, once I turned it off I got a connection. I have success running Activesky on the laptop but the next issue is running SB itself. Running the setup for SB for 2004 on the laptop I get asked which directory FS is in, since it is on my desktop in a file that I'm not sharing with this laptop what do I do? Then, question two once I do get it up and running what is the sequence for connecting to SB from the laptop. Is it..1. connect to the multiplayer session from within FS as usual then2. start SB relay on the laptop3. start SB1.2 from the laptop?Do I still need the hostSB module with FS itself? So many questions, so little time... at least for me anyway, I'll be away for the next week but will hit it again then.thanks for your efforts, presario
November 26, 200322 yr Hi Jim,Don't know what happened but I sent a lengthy reply last night but it doesn't seem to be here, so here goes again.Set up a dummy empty FS2k2 directory on the laptop and tell SB that you want to install the FS2002 version to that directory. It is only used to put the CSL files into the aircraft directory.Choose a location on the laptop for SB itself.Once SB has installed you will see in the Fs2k2 directoryFS2002aircraftcslcopy the 'csl' folder to the aircraft directory of FS on your desktop PC.Install SBRelay to your desktop PC and read the readme file. In there you will find a lot of text you need to add to your fs9.cfg file, copy that otherwise you will get error msgs from FS when flying with Vatsim.Connecting.1) Run SBRelay and wait for it establish. If llok at the SBRelay window you will see a line something like 'You can now connect FS2004 and SquawkBox to this server'. Minimise SBRelay.2) Run FS and Multiplayer connect. For 'Player name' use the callsign you will use on Vatsim. Leave the IP address box blank and press 'search'.3)In the 'Sessions' box you should see 'SBRelay - FS2004, highlight that and click 'join': do NOT host the session as you would normally do.4) Start Wideclient on the laptop and you should see 'Connecte' in its titlebar and in the FS titlebar you should see ': 1 Connected'.5) Start SB. Click the OK button in the 'override' window. Now on my system SB remains on the taskbar so I have to click on it there to go to the next phase.6) In the SB-Multiplayer Connect window enter a player name (anything will do) and highlight 'Internet TCP/IP Connection for DirectPlay' and then click OK.7) In the 'Multiplayer Games' window click 'Start Search', leave the 'Locate Session' box empty and click OK. In the Multiplayer Games window you should now see 'SBRelay - SquawkBox2(1/814)' Click 'Join'8) SB splash screen should now appear. Click on the bottom bar 'Click here to get into the action' and SB should open as normal and will appear on the Wideclient window. You can now resize the Wideclient window to your taste.I don't know if this is specific to my system but SB will not automatically run RW, initially I have to start it manually, after that it will autotune to the controllers.I suggest you do a dummy run first and see if SB does start your RW, if not then run RW before you run SB then it will be ready. You can also use the new voice s/ware AVC. Just install it, set it up as per instructions and SB will use that instead of RW. Just remember to tick the 'use RW voice' in the 'Connect to PC/SB Server' and enter a valid RW server in that window also. Also make sure 'communicate with Roger Wilco' is ticked in the SB Options pop-up menu.Hope that gets you flying. There are other things you can do with 2 PCs but I'll leave that for now, I think you have enough to be going on with :-)Rgds
December 6, 200322 yr Hi VulcanWell I'm back at it, I did everything you said, however I have the following problem, when I go to start SB on the laptop, I see 'SBRelay - SquawkBox2(1/814)' then click 'Join', but nothing happens, wideclient is connected but SB doesn't want to start, the splash screen doesn't appear any ideas?Jim
December 6, 200322 yr One more thing, the message I get in the SBRelay 1.2 window is as follows..."21:37:20 Added player 'AC889' to FS2004 session21:38:02 added player 'Squakbox' to FS2002 session.21:39:02 Removed player 'Squakbox' from FS2002 session21:39:02 Error searching for FS2004 server. Session not found"now does the fact that it bounces from FS2002 to FS2004 have anything to do with it?Jim
December 6, 200322 yr I think you may have a network connection problem Jim. I should check that the desktop and laptop can communicate with each other and for now disable any firewalls.I would also check that WideFS is set up correctly, especially the wideclient.ini file, check that you have the server IP address entered correctly. As you can see from the SBRelay output for some reason SB is being booted out of the FS2002 session before it even gets to the FS2004 session. What you should see in SBRelay isAdded player 'AC889' to FS2004 sessionAdded player 'Squawkbox' to FS20002 sessionAdded fake player 'Squawkbox' to FS2004 sessionSorry I can't be more help but if I think of anything else I'll post back. In the meantime hopefully someone who has had this problem will reply.Good luck.
December 6, 200322 yr Well I think the network connection is OK, I can run activesky from my laptop throught the network using widefs so I can't figure out why SB will not work. I'll keep trying and if you or anyone else has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.Jim
December 7, 200322 yr OK Jim, Afer some more reading and trawling through newgroups some more suggestions.I think the problem could still be a network one because you are using a router. I do not use a router so can only post here what I have read and cannot offer first hand experience, sorry. You need to make sure port 6809 is open for SB and 6703 is open for SBRelay, I think you will find some of this mentioned in the SBRelay documents.I cannot help with settings these ports but any documets you have with your router should help you.You could also try changing the port in FS2004 from 23456 to 23457.Some people have said turning the router off gets them connected, others say resetting the router does it.You could also try putting SBrelay on the laptop, someone found this worked whereas putting on the FS computer didn't.With my limited knowledge of how all this works SBrelay only makes a dummy FS2002 session so SB can join it as if it was FS2002 and then FS2004 joins and SBRelay sort of interprets the fake FS2002 data to FS2004.Check which version of SB you have installed, it should be V2.3.0.4 NOT 2.3.0.5Go to your Squawkbox folder, right click on squawkbox.exe and select properites from the pop-up menu then go to the version tab.It is a while since I installed Squawkbox and I cannot remember which version (FS2000 or FS2002) you have to install for a 2 PC setup. Installing the wrong version *may* cause the problem. If the version above shows 2.3.0.5 uninstall SB and reinstall using the FS2000 option. If you already have SB installed on the desktop PC and have used it without problems, copy the ipaddr.txt file from there to SB on your laptop.See if the tutorials at http://www.hawarden.org.uk/ help.Click on 'Hawarden Virtual Airport UK, Click Here to Enter'Then on the left go to New Pilots Tutorial and check out what's there, including the Flash tutorials, they have voice-overs by Andy King.Andy king may also be able to help with your problem, I think he uses a multiple PC setup. Also if you have no luck try posting to the vatsim or vatsim-uk newsgroup at http://www.simflight.com/news5/Let us all know how you get on. There are people out there using 2 PCs and routers so it can be done.
