December 21, 200223 yr I run Win98SE which I understand does not support ACPI but it is enabled on my mo/bo. I wish to remove or disable it as at the moment the graphics card is sharing an IRQ which I understand is not a good thing.I did read some time back how it is done and I remember it is not straight forward, however I have done a search on this forum and did not find anything about removing ACPI.TIA
December 21, 200223 yr Author Ignore request, found a web site with one method of removal.http://web.ukonline.co.uk/sheppard.p/acpi.htmlIn case anyone else wishes to remove ACPI
December 21, 200223 yr Win98 does support Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), which is an extension of earlier Advanced Power Management (APM). To disable ACPI, you probably need to disable it in BIOS and maybe reinstall Windows so the correct files are loaded on your system. Is this worth it? It depends on what you perceive as a problem. To see if ACPI is loaded on your system, open device manager and double click on System devices, and check the list for ACPI or APM. If you find either, you would need to reinstall Windows with an install switch. Also visit the following:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...B;en-us;182628& Bill Sieffert
December 21, 200223 yr Author Thanks for the reply Bill.Strangely enough my Abit manual says Win98 does not support ACPI and someone in a ng said the same.I have also heard that certain cards do not like sharing their IRQ, which of course happens with ACPI, and one of these is the graphics card, and this was the real reason for getting rid of ACPI.I will see how things go with ACPI enabled and look again at removing it *if* I have problems. Thanks for the link to the MS KB, I had read that page but could find no reference to removing ACPI, only disabling IRQ steering. As I say I will see how it goes with ACPI enabled.Rgds
December 22, 200223 yr Author Now have another problem :-(, don't know if it is related to ACPI or not.System runs fine with 256MB RAM but as soon as I put a second 256 stick in I get all sorts of errors and fatal exceptions.Knowing that win98 does not like more than 512MB RAM I decided to try the fixes MS show for the 'over 512MB RAM'I have set 'limit memory to' 500MB in msconfigIn the system.ini file, vcache section I haveMaxFileCache=512000But still get the errors as soon as Win98SE starts.I have checked the memory with 'memtest' from DOS, no errors.I have tried each stick in turn, no errors.I have tried each stick in different banks, still get the errors.
December 23, 200223 yr If you get errors that provide specific information such as stack numbers, file causing problem, etc., and you post the exact information it is easier to troubleshoot. I usually take the information and search the Mircrosoft website to see if a matching error has been reported and what their solution was.Do you have the manual for your MOBO? I would also check to see if you need to set/reset any BIOS switches. One other thing to consider is whether your original/new ram has error checking (ECC). If one has error checking and the other doesn't, it could cause problems when they are together. Sometimes in BIOS, you can turn off the error checking. Bill Sieffert
December 23, 200223 yr Author The errors are various and all point to the problem Win98SE has with RAM around and above 512MB.Each stick of RAM is new, of the same make and purchased from the same retailer at the same time. I have no reason to believe either stick is defective, all tests show no problem with the memory.I have read various articles about 'large' memory and Win98SE but despite setting MaxFileCache in system.ini to various recommended settings the problem persists.I shall do some more searching, reading and testing and see if anything works.Again many thanks for your reply.
