March 23, 200323 yr Today I noticed a strange sound coming from inside my computer... Thinking it was a cooling fan going bad on me I removed the cover and noticed that this unusual sound came from inside my Seagate Barracuda hard-drive! This hard-drive has about a year... The sound is as if there Regards, Hugo Bravo LPPT
March 23, 200323 yr Sounds like it could be going!! You have all the bad JUJU, don't you?? Bill Sieffert
March 23, 200323 yr My Western Digital was making that noise and after few weeks I usedWD's diagnostic tool and got "Too many errors, call support"Called them up and they said it should be replaced and got the RMA.I'd suggest you to go to manufacturer's website and download the diagnostic tool and see what it says.
March 25, 200323 yr Author Thanks a lot for your suggestions. Strangely enough today I turn on my computer and there was no weird sound coming from my HD?Maybe it fixed itself... :-lol Anyway I Regards, Hugo Bravo LPPT
March 25, 200323 yr What you are forgetting is the diskdrive warranty. Don't dilly-dally around and let the warranty expire before you ask the diskdrive vendor to honor the warranty.Do as Georgi suggests and test the drive, get an RMA if it is going bad, and use the warranty. Important files should be burned to CDR or CDRW for safe keeping. Bill Sieffert
March 25, 200323 yr My 2 year old Western Digital 20GB has been messing up like that lately too. Makes like a loud *Clink Clonk* sound occasionally (on a near silent drive its quite noticable). It happens to be the main drive in my older K6 computer, and i'm kinda concerned about it, since my family uses it. It started these noises like immediately after a power supply failure, which melted the plastic off the 12V wire completely before nearly catching fire. Ever since then, it has had a problem with corrupt files and XP crashing a lot (I suspect that clink clonk sound is not a good thing). I put my WD 6GB in that computer as the slave drive so nobody loses anything important until the 20GB flat out crashes. Sad end for such a nice drive :(.
March 25, 200323 yr >Sad end for such a nice drive :(. Since it's only 2 years old download the WD's tool and check for errors. You will be able to replace it for free if the drive is indeed damaged as it sounds. As WD experience, I just got my replacement. It's sooo quiet and doesn't make and Clink noiseslike my 1st replacement so looks like the 1st replacement was dead on arrival.
March 26, 200323 yr Author I went to the Seagate site and found out by using the diagnostic tools available there that my HD reported a S.M.A.R.T. error (I think this is how they call it!) and could stop working any minute!!!I Regards, Hugo Bravo LPPT
March 27, 200323 yr If your HD reported a SMART error than more than likely it may need to be replaced. One thing I saw noone mention is that of a drive that is doing what s called Disk Thrashing. This can happen due to A: a drive that is in bad need of a defrag by a quality Defrag program, not the one that ships w Windows. This problem can at times sound like a drive going bad. B: A machine that is low on ram will need to access the paging file quite a bit. This can also sound like a drive on it's last leg. C: I had an old 60 gig Dekstar that one of the few that didnt have so many of the problems that were being experienced. It started making noises a year ago. After running diagnostics and coming up with disk errors I bit the bullet and performed a Low LEvel format of the drive. Scary as it was that drive is still up and running in my wifes machine to this day. Lucky maybe but in my case I had nothing to lose. In your case it would seem your due a new drive. Just thought I would throw this in for those that may be hearing noises coming from their drives that are making them nervous. Check these first, than go the new drive route.
