Advise needed on installing a new power unit.

Featured Replies

HelloI am about to upgrade my 3 watt power unit to a 5 watt. I have never done this before. Is there any advise you can offer? I have the new power supply. What I need is advise on the actual mechanics of installing the new unit. Any hints, traps, look out for's etc? Need more power for my gforce and MSFS.ThanksRegards,Ed

Well, hopefully you meant 300w and 500w vice 3w and 5w. Installing the new powersupply may or may not be easy. It all depends on your case size, power switch arrangement, etc. Before you do anything, move your computer case to a good work base, i.e., kitchen table, workbench, etc. In any case, make sure you don't have the computer plugged into house power.Open the case, then look at the present installation, i.e., attaching holes, screws, cable lengths and types, ON/OFF switching - on-board and remote, and size requirements for the new PS.If after review, it looks like the new PS will fit, start detaching the different cables from the peripherals and MOBO. Remove the remote switch (if provided). Once everything is disconnected, unscrew the PS from the case noting its orientation just in case you need to reinstall.Reverse the procedure with the new PS. Make sure the remote switch can reach its location prior to installing all the rest of the cables, etc.You may have to make some adjustments, e.g., drill new mounting holes, to fit the new PS.
