May 18, 200323 yr I would like to upgrade my Video Card. I currently have a Nvidia Riva TNT 2(16mb) with a Intel P3 450. How much card can I really use before wasting my money?GaryCTO (1979)Rated Ft. Wainwright AAF Control Tower (1980)PPL Single Engine Land (1983)
May 18, 200323 yr Do you have an AGP slot? If so, will it handle up to 4X? If so (again) I would go with say at GForce 3 TI 500 or maybe the GForce 4 Ti 4200....both of which you should be able to get for under $100....My second computer is a P3 1gz. with an AGP slot and I just installed an ATI 9200. I really like it, but it might be a bit overkill for your 450 CPU.[div align=center][link:www.jetdoc.com/STO/]Visit The Bookstore & Gift Shoppe][/b
May 18, 200323 yr This is a tough question to answer.. it really depends on what your goals and budget are..Here is my experience, for what it is worth:I started out with a Celeron 500 system, not unlike yours..a GF2MX-32 card was replaced by a GF4-4200-128 and over time, the system was upgraded to a Celeron 900 (the fastest that was supported on my motherboard) and then the whole thing was replaced by my current setup:P4-2.4 on an Asus P4PE board which is just about what it takes to really run FS2k2 well. The lesson.. if you are going to invest, get something that will last you for a while and budget accordingly.. just upgrading one component will only make you wish for the next step..Your current system is reasonably well balanced, but not sufficient to run FS2k2 well (IMHO)..If you just want the card for now.. get a GF4-4200-128 or an ATI-9500, you can continue to use them even after you have upgraded your system.Make sure that your motherboard and power supply support a current technology AGP 2x/4x/8x card, however, before you spend the money! If my experience is a guide, however, you will not be happy until you have a lot more processor power.. and that usually means a new motherboard, bigger power supply, and faster memory (ie a new system). May 18, 200323 yr Thanks!! I guess this post is in the wrong Forum. I wanted to apoligize for that.I believe TNT 2 is AGP. I dont know what YOU mean by, Will it handle 4X?
May 18, 200323 yr Thanks Bert. I guess I am looking for a $40 to $100 card Just to get by. As far as the budget goes I dont want to through money away butI am waiting for the P4 3gigs to be midrange in price.
May 18, 200323 yr I would still counsel against spending money on a card that you will be replacing again... If your budget and system can handle it today, get a GF4-4200-128 and keep it when you upgrade to your 3 Gig system. Bert
