Norton Utilties and WinXP Home

Featured Replies

No. Far from it. Facts do interest me. But do try to keep up; as you see, I've already been run out of town on a rail by Fortress (Paul). I concede to you both. Apologies, gentlemen...Rick

Anything pre Systemworks2002 will not run on an XP machine so that's mute. SW2002 will run. It's speed disk features rearranges files on your HD for supposed faster access. In my exp. It provides almost no performance increase.XP has a built in defrag utility. Problem with it is it's relatively slow and doesn't defrag all the system files in one pass.Want to solve your problem, answer your question and put this thread to rest....... DISKKEEPER 7.0Problem solved :)Bobby

I have followed this thread with some interest. It seems the Norton sales force is out with a vengeance here, no doubt. I work with 650+ desktop machines and 300+ laptops and defrag occasionally with the default win2k defragger. Our users are hard to accomodate in order to have the time to fool around with it but we do try to get to in a couple of times a year when we can interrupt their activities enough to get it done. Most of the time we wait until someone complains that his system is "awfully slow compared to Charlie's" and then we tell them it has to be defragged and they let us. They are oh so apologetic for putting us off all those months when we politely asked if we could bother them for just a few minutes. But, I ramble on so...One particularly interesting thing I saw down the line in these responses is the one where Norton optimises the page file. That so? What does it do, put it in one block of memory at system startup? Isn't that what it does anyway? Why bother when the page file goes away every time the computer is shut down and is re built when the computer starts back up. Do you mean you need to optimize the page file during a normal work day? You know, come to think of it that must be why our PCs are so screwed up. The page files need to be optimised!! Thanks for the advice, guys!By the way, there is no way in the world I would put anything as undependable as Norton or McAffee on any machine for any reason. There are far better utilities out there if you would just do a little research. No, I will not post what we use because I am not in the business of selling add on utilities. As to defragging, the win2k default is just fine, thanks. Now, the M$ response to security issues, now that is an entirely different matter, one which is not gone into here so I will stay out of it too.
