August 10, 200322 yr Would like your opinion.Current System: ASUS A7V / AMD 1.2GHz Processor / 512MB RAM / GEFORCE2 64 UltraI want better framerates. Would I be better off to get a Faster CPU or a video card with larger memory? It is either/or, not both.I only use my PC for flightsimming. AI Traffic in FS9 kills my framerates.Thanks.Jim
August 10, 200322 yr Jim your set up is close to what I have. Except I had a GF3 Ti-200and 748MB SDRAM. I havent upgraded the CPU yet because of $$ but I did just drop some cash into a video card. Think you will need both. However suggest you take the GF2 card and retire it first. I got a gainward GF4 Ti-4800 SE card with 128MB of Vram. Makes a big difference in quality of rendering and allows more special effects. PC runs pretty decent, just turn off the 3D clouds...simple clouds will do.On the whole you should do the Vid card first, then do the Mobo and CPU...lastly more ram...but not til you know what the new MOBO will handle. Also...if you do power up the PC dont forget to look at the power supply to run it.EricPS: I think I just said you need a new PC... :-) AND
August 11, 200322 yr Author Eric,LOL! Thanks for your input, I appreciate it. I might go the card route for now. As for the PS, it's atleast a 350W, may be a 400W.I build my own PCs and hate the thought of starting to bleed cash again. This one has done well. My handmedowns become family member's upgrades. :)Regards,Jim
August 11, 200322 yr Well the A7V is getting antiquated thus your getting limited on the CPU it will support.Granted I've been reading on some forums that ppl are actually getting their Athlon XP's ( i.e 1700+, 2200+, 2400+) to work on this board. Strange but true!I think you have to have atleast a rev 1.02 board for this to work.If you stick w/ your current system for a while then yeah I'd go the route of getting a new vid card. Atleast you can then port it over to the new system when you do decide to get it.Just remember that the latest & greatest vid cards do like to have the latest & gratest system behind them. Without it you won't be seeing the full potential of the card.Upgrading is such a bear. Once you upgrade one thing the "might as well" factor kicks in & you'll end up upgrading everything :)Cheers.
