September 19, 200322 yr Hi !A technical problem for you hardware gurus !My primary hard disk is partitioned into a C: and F: drive (D: and E: are the CDR and DVD drives) and whilst the analysis of the F: drive appears to match the total volume used with the sum total of the various sub-folders, for the C: drive there is a big disparity. For the 9.7Gb C: drive the total for the sub-folders is about 6.05Gb, however WinXP reports that there is a little less that 1Gb free space. This is mirrored when looked at by the Information utility within Norton Utilities. For the F: drive if "everything" is selected (including sub-folders) the "pie-slice" for selected items is exactly the same as for the total size of the disk used. For the C: drive, under the same parameters, the selected items come to about 6.05Gb and the disk used space to around 8.75Gb.Thus there is around a 3Gb "disparity" that I would be interested in finding out the cause of.The system runs under WinXP Home, and the partitions are both NTFS.Can anyone shine any light on this ?Many thanks,Alastair
September 19, 200322 yr Hi Alastair,do you have Windows installed on your C drive? If so, did you include hidden files in your selection, especially 'pagefile.sys' (in the root of the drive, not in a folder) and the recycle bin ('C:Recycler', a hidden folder). Also, what are your system restore options? There may be quite a few restore points that are saved (I can't remember where they go... :)), which also takes up a lot of space.Cheers,Gosta.http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg
September 19, 200322 yr Author Hi !The selection does include all hidden files. The pagefile.sys file is on the F: drive, and the Recycler folder is included in the selected sub-folders that make up the known 6.05Gb. The Restore Points folders (presumably those listed as $NtUninstall***) are also accounted for under Windows, and take up only 67Mb as listed. I guess its possible for these to be "keys" (?) pointing to stored files in the "unknown" region, but I don't know. Thanks for the help, anyway !Cheers,Alastair

September 20, 200322 yr Author Hi !Many thanks. By reducing the permitted storage size for the Restore Points from its default maximum setting of 1200Mb to 500Mb I now have just over 3Gb of free space. Thanks for the help,Alastair
