Power supply problem?

Featured Replies

First my AGP video card was acting very wierd, it would freese up. While it was frozen the PCI video card seamed to be working fine, I could use the second moniter with no problem. Any graphically intense program would freese up the computer though. I removed the AGP card and for two days the computer worked fine, since the PCI card poots FS didnt run well but it stoped freezing up. After two days went by, the computer will no longer start up at all. It acts as if its unpluged. After checking it is pluged in and I havent blown a fuse I'm trying to confirm that I need to replace the power supply so I dont so it needlessly.thanks for any input

Troubleshooting powersupply failures aren't fun. Your only option is to put in a different powersupply to see if it corrects your problem. Otherwise, you would need to completely disconnect the powersupply and do bench tests with external loads and voltage/ampere meters. You could try disconnecting all peripherals, except one graphics card, and floppy drive. Try booting from the floppy and see if the computer even starts. Do you get any beeps, at all, when you press the power button? Do you see any leds lit on the motherboard?W. Sieffert

All I can get the power supply to do, either enitrely connected, or partially connected is to make a sickly weezing noise. no leds light up, nothing. I found some info about what voltage should be in which pins on the main connector, and all my voltages are about 1 whole volt off + or -. My voltage tester is an industrial unit ment to be used with volts up to 880 and 150 amps. But it is acurate and reliable to one decimal point.

Wolf,Here's how I found my Power Supply was going (gone)south!:-waveDownload and install Motherboard Monitor. Set it up correctly and set the logging up to record entries every two seconds or so. Once setup the way you want it (mainly to follow the voltages) start up a game or program that will guarantee a failure/reboot/all of the above. At the point the problem finally occurs, note the time, or at least aproximate it, and look at your log files at what the voltages were. For me, my system would reboot after several minutes into FS2000, or any other game. Once rebooted, I'd look at the log file, where I found my 5v line slowing dropping to the last few entries. ending up at 4.72vdc. Considering the tolerance is +/- 5%, Antec replaced the supply without any other questions. I even threw in the difference for the 412w supply and haven't had a problem since.Hope this helps,TomKONT

I dont think that program would work, since the computer wont turn on. Since I dont get power to run the power supplys own fans, the hard drives, cpu etc. I cant even get as far as BIOS. `I do have a new powersupply installed and continue to have the same problems. Testing the powersupply while not connected to the motherboard its voltage readings ane equal to what they should be. The new powersupply fans will even come on unlike the old powersupply. It seams to me as if the motherboard and original powersupply has gone bad.
