Nvidia and AA

Featured Replies

About 2 years ago, I built an AMD XP2400 based machine with 512 meg RAM and a Geforce4 TI4200. I does OK for me right now and I won't build a new one for another couple of years. I have always known that the TI4200 based on the Nvidia chip doesn't like AA and you can see at this website http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/2..._charts-03.html the way in which it suffers compared with many other video cards. However, my local computer shop has some ATI cards selling very cheaply for only $99 AUD . This is called an Xtreama ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-SE 128meg DDR TV / DVI. I can't really understand how it isdescribed as a "PRO-SE" model -- but anyway, it is obviously a cheaper brand card but at $99, it would be worth trying out. The Toms Hardware graph shows a significant increase in FPS for this card compared to a TI4200 -- using a Pentium 3200 CPU which is faster than mine. What do you all think? Thanks Barry

Barry,In general terms, FS scales more with CPU than with video card. In other words, changing CPUs result in greater performance improvement than changing video cards. (Note that the OPPOSITE is generally true in most games other than FS.)Having said that, since you have such an antiquated card (Ti4200) and since the video card you saw is so cheap, it may be worth your while to give it a shot.Incidentally, I think the shop is mislabelling the product - at that price, I'm guessing it's the 9800 SE and *not* the 9800 Pro. I have never heard of a 9800 Pro SE but I don't follow the individual mid-range models too closely so I could be wrong. BTW, I used to have a 9800 Pro and loved it - used it for over two years playing such graphics intensive games as Half Life 2 at 1600x1200 (no AA though).Hope this helps.Edwin

Hi Bazza,I say go for the card mate.I used an NVidia Geforce 4 4800Ti in my old rig and that was pretty good, but I haven't experienced graphics like I am now with my new rig running a Radeon X850XT.Even though this card is more advanced than the 9800 it keeps the same design chipset principles.Regards,Ralf..
