  1. I haven't used FSx for about 18 months now. Up until then I had a Duo Core 6600 CPU with 2 Gig Ram and and old ATI x800 AGP vid card. I used that happily for quite some time. Now I have an Intel I3-540 , 4 gig Ram - but at this time no Vid card. Whilst not the fastest CPU around now, it is still much faster than my old 6600 and will give me satisfactory performance with a suitable vid card. . Could anybody advise what vid card would be suitable to match this CPU.Thanks Barry
  2. For quite a few years I was an ardent Simmer and used FSx for a few years before taking a break from it. The computer I had was an Intel Duel Core E6600 with 2 Gig of SLOW RAM and an old ATI x800 AGP video card with only 250 meg of memory. With this rig, I was quite happy with my simming and I used quite a few addons. If it had a weakness, I always felt that it was the lack of video RAMI now have a computer based on an Intel I3-550 (3.2 Gig) and 4 Gig of 1333mhz Ram. Now I know this is far from being the latest CPU - but it is more powerful than my old E6600 . I want to purchase a PCIx vid card to match the processor. Whatever I buy will be more powerful and have more RAM than the old ATI AGP X800.So can anybody make any suggestions of a vid card for me - around $100 max?? Remember - I said not to laugh! :Shame On You: Thanks Barry
  3. Problem solved -- and it is a problem that is stated all over the Internet with no answer.I tried everything - including old Catalyst drivers. The Control panel showed that everything was Ok - but the DXDIAG showed no acceleration..In Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Display adaptors - I uninstalled the Vid card ( Right click - uninstall) . The machine rebooted and then found the drivers that had been installed. For some reason unknown to me, the machine was not installing the correct drivers upon installation of the drivers - even though it appeared that it had. All OK nowBarry
  4. HiI have an oldish machine - Intel Core 2 Duo6600, WindowsXP SP2, ATI AGP x800 vid card.Having had this for a few years, I have many times reformated the Hdd and reinstalled Windows and all programs etc. Format the Hdd, install Windows, install MOBO drivers, install Vid card drivers. - never ever had a problem.BUT - this time, there is something wrong with my vid card. Everything was working very nicely before getting a Trojan - which required me to reinstall. In DXDIAG, I have no Direct3D available. Have tried EVERYTHING - , reinstalled Windows, latest MOBO drivers, latest DirectX, tried many different drivers (having cleaned out old ones with Driver Cleaner) But no good !! Am now at wits end and wondering if there could be a hardware problem. Control panel is all clear - no problems (no yellow question marks) - it says I have an ATI X800 installed. But Google Earth tells me that it cannot find a video card and therefore can't run.I have searched Google - and find that this is a VERY common problem, with the only solutions offered is to reinstall drivers, etc. HELP PLEASE!!!Barry
  5. G'day BillThanks for that - I would only consider the content of that link I posted to be an "hypothesis" - a single possibility. It could be true or not. However, it does at least make some sense financially - and hence increases its credibility to me. I hope that you are correct in your assertion. Barry
  6. This makes sense - as to why MS have done what they have doneBarry
  7. You can't. TP turns off autogen.Barry
  8. Geofawas out of business within the year-and it had been in business for yearsWell, in these cases, we really don't know what the situation was. This business may have in fact been just breaking even or even losing a little every year for years. If I (or you - I am sure :( ) had a million dollars invested in some enterprise that was paying us a nett profit of 1 or 2% or less maybe, we would want more - and would either attempt to clean the business up or move the investment elsewhere. This is not to say that some very good businesses have not been destroyed by stupid, greedy management. Returning to the case in point - MS and FS. I have no idea why MS have chosen to do what they have done. But it is their money ( the shareholders) and they can do with it whatever they wish - same as you and I can. You know where any suggestion otherwise leads to :( Barry
  9. It seems to me that perhaps this possible new direction may be a very good thing for established developers - as it will open up their market to many more buyers.BUT - this hobby has a foundation of small-time amateur developers - who do their very first paintjob, or a/c or panel and take great pride in it. Then they may go on to bigger and greater things. BUT - are those people going to be able to get a foot onto the ladder in the future?? And what will be the future of the entire freeware concept - without which, even the best known addon developers would be unheard of today. The times they certainly are a-changing. But what will be, will be. Barry
  10. Well - who knows what reality really is. All I know from personal experience, is that if I hit my head against the wall it hurts my head. When I stop hitting my head against the wall, the pain goes away! The same thing happens with my installation of FSx - with SP2 installed, I get these vertical graphical anomolies regardless of where my sliders are placed - when I uninstall SP2, I can place my sliders anywhere and do not get them.Barry
  11. I used to see this when I had SP2 installed - uninstalling SP2 removed my problemBarry
  12. You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great LIVE experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time."Barry
  13. GeofI used ME as the map provider - the resolution could have been better . I will try again using Y. It is a shame we have lost G though!! Barry
  14. Yes - agreed - good fun.I also flew it in Tileproxy - although my Internet connection had a bit of trouble keeping up with the Baron. Barry
  15. I am happy that the question was asked :-) - because I have also been getting those messages from Service 3.Actually, lately I have been using Service 1 quite a lot with success.I just wish there was some kind of map that showed where high res textures are available for the different services. What you see on websites like "Flash Earth" and what you actually get in TP often seem to be 2 different things x( Barry
  16. I got these artifacts about 18 months ago. For the past 18 months I have used FSx in exactly the same way that I used it then - the hardware has not changed, my drivers have not changed, my video settings have not changed. No OOM's ever - no blurries.Only one thing has changed since the time that I was getting these artifacts and now, 18 months later - and that is the removal of SP2. So if FSx runs as well as I need using SP1 on the hardware that I have - without artifacts -- but does have artifacts if I install SP2?? What more can I say.I am sure that if I purchased a whole new computer - this problem would probably go away - but removing SP2 is fine with me. Barry
  17. "Seriously, it is a memory error - period."It is very easy to make a statement like that - what evidence do you have to support this statement.?My evidence is that I continued to have this "problem" REGARDLESS of the scenery settings within FSx, and hence regardless of vid RAM usage. This problem occured even when all of the settings were set to their lowest values - and there was absolutely the lowest usage of Vid ram. However, after I uninstalled SP2, I can now operate my settings as high as I like -- obviously high settings also impact on FPS and therefore I don't fly all the time on these high settings but set them at a point (depending on just whereabouts I am flying)that allow workable FPS, but my point is that the graphical glitches are GONE with SP2 gone.!Barry
  18. It's not a memory issue at all - uninstall FSX SP2 if you have this problemBarry
  19. Hi ChristianThanks for your work -- I am not sure how well this "Blue Marble" image is working for me - I can see in the TP box that the first oval is empty ( although sometimes it seems to have some small number of crosses in it) - but can't see any effect of this onscreen. The overall initial loading time is probably a bit quicker (haven't actually timed it) - but I think that my mainproblem is the slow download of textures as I fly along. I usually fly a chopper at around 80 Knots - but I very quickly get ahead of the texture download, having to pasue every few minutes.. A return flight along the same path is much better. I only have a 1 MBit ADSL network link to the Internet.Barry
  20. I have just noticed that after running the "Cleanup World Folder" programme, my Tileproxy Photoreal World folder is still showing 1 gigabyte content. Help!! :-)Barry
  21. Now that we can no longer access Google textures, I am finding that Y*** textures are quite good for mainland US - but far inferior elsewhere in the world.Just wondering what places outside US people have found good textures? Thanks Barry
  22. Hi RobYour post re the de-installation of SP2 has made me smile.About a year ago when I first installed SP2, I had these graphical problems - everybody said that it was "lack of memory" problems. I thought that it could perhaps be so - as I only have a 256 meg vid card. My problem with this though was that I was monitoring my vid card RAM usage with a programme called "MEMSTATUS" and it appeared to be showing that I had nowhere near maxed out my vid card memory when this problem occured . Reducing scenery settings made no difference for me - and surprisingly, the problem seemsd to me to be associated with the default Missions.Anyway, deactivation/removal of SP2 removed my problem. BTW - my system is totally different to yours - yours has a faster CPU, more memory and more Vid RAMBarry
  23. I also have no more "spikes" - after I uninstalled FSx SP2!!Barry
