Old system + new Vid card = wow

Featured Replies

So as you may know, I have a old Dell Dimension XPS T500, which was originally a PIII and has a processor upgrade to a Celeron 1.2. 384 megs of RAM. Original video Card was a Diamond Viper 770 ultra 32. (That's 32 megs..)I'd been running FS for years on this system... not great, but certainly acceptable. USA Roads is installed. So I've been looking into upgrading the video card for some time. Finally, a few days ago, I broke down and spend $150 on a BFG GeForce 6200 OC, which is a 256 meg card and supports DX9.After a flawless installation, all I can say (well, not really all I can say) is WOW. I have my system locked at 20, and while it often drops below that, that's essentially the same performance I had before - BUT-Now, I'm at 1024 x 768 with things turned up pretty high. I couldn't get reflective water before... or very good looking clouds or skies... and distant ground textures slowly popped into being when switching views... man, those skies look way better. And clouds don't "pop" into existence now, either. That's all gone now! Woo hoo!So, on a relatively junky system (by today's standards) it's like I'm running a new sim. :)My two questions are whether the card is overkill, and whether Ultimate Terrain noticeably affects performance more than USA Roads. (I assume it does.)So... yay.Andrew

Hello,Well done !! old systems are "sometimes" , like mine, beter than new ones... Have fun.I did overclock my CPU and video card .... with success.
