Visibility Question...

Featured Replies

Greetings! I was in a flight, on approach, and ran into a strange quirk. As I approached my wxRE "locked" destination, the in-game and out-of-game METAR messages report 10 mi., but the visibility appeared far lower. I looked in the default MSFS weather settings area only to find it set at 5 mi. I was below the cloud deck (which was "partial", if I recall). For 20 miles or so until landing, I flew in that murk. The flight was in my local area, and looking outside it really seemed almost unlimited for vis. Just tossing this occurance out to the forum in case others have seen the same...-Greg

Hi Greg,This sounds like the overcast vis reduction feature. It will identify any overcast layers and when found will reduce your vis to 3.5 miles to avoid the blue band FS2002 problem. You can disable this feature in the options at the expense of seeing the blue band.-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

I Damian, I was under the impression that only occurred if the overcast was below 2000 agl. I saw the same thing tonight and am posting the screenshot of the Status and a pic of what I was actually seeing. The towers on the very left side of the pic (to the left of the Beaver) are about 4 to 5 miles distant. Could you just have a quick look and see if this is the case (the vis reduction program)? Neat feature if it is, and I'm quite glad you can disable that for those times when it may not be just what you want. Note the Parse Error in the METAR Date/Time box (top right of Status Window).Flew later in light snow and 4 miles vis - WOW - really neat stuff! Thanks Damian,Glennhttp://www3.sympatico.ca/g.davy/WXRE/Status1.jpghttp://www3.sympatico.ca/g.davy/WXRE/Statuspic1.jpg

Hi Glenn,We changed the OVC vis reduction logic just before release to always reduce vis during any OVC layer. This way you would always eliminate the blue band if you didn't want to see it.The parse error.. Could you give me the METAR string causing this? Thanks!-Damian

Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation SoftwareDeveloper of ActiveSkyThe next-generation weather environment simulation for FS2002!http://hifi.avsim.net/activeskyhttp://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/images/wxrebeta.jpg]
[/table://http://hifi.avsim.net/activesky/ima...]
[/table

That's COOL! Good move on changing the logic there. That's probably what it was. Here's the METAR and the TAF (in case that entered into it):CYOY 161400Z 01006KT 15SM FEW030 OVC071 M06/M11 A2985 RMK CYOY 161612Z 161601 02005KT P6SM BKN030 TEMPO 1619 3/4SM -SHSN VV010 BECMG 1618 02010KT FM2300Z 02005KT P6SM FEW250 RMK NXT FCST BY 20ZMy FS time (I don't use System time) was 14:30ZSorry for the delay in getting this too you. I had to go to bed (funny thing about that - I seem to actually have to sleep from time to time :-) )Thanks very much Damian!Glenn
