December 25, 200322 yr No rush for this, after the Hols will do.This evening's flight into LOWI I was hoping to do a visual from the West to Rwy 08.AS2 showed LOWI as the reporting station and gave the followingLOWI 242350Z AUTO 27004KT 230V290 1500 9999W R08/P1500 NSW M14/M14 LOWI 242200Z 250624 27004KT CAVOKNow I admit I'm not very good at reading METARs other than the winds and temps/dew points but I do know what CAVOK means.IS the first line telling me that visibility is 1500 metrers or 9999 meters?I ask because during the approach to 08 at LOWI visibility got worse and worse, all I could see was fog, this at an altitude of 3,000ft.I went into FS and cleared the weather and then refreshed AS2 weather. When I cleared the weather I could plainly see LOWI but as AS updated the weather the cloud/fog started to appear and over about 30 seconds LOWI was blanked out.I had FS in slew mode for these tests.Next I wwent into AS options and unticked 'Overcast enhancment', then I unticked 'Fog layer generation' and finally ticked 'Disable CAVOK cloud generation'.Each time I cleared the weather in FS and then refreshed AS weather and each time the fog came back?Am I doing something wrong?Am I misreading the METAR?Do I have a setting wrong somewhere? Thanks for any assistance, when you have time.
December 25, 200322 yr "IS the first line telling me that visibility is 1500 metrers or 9999 meters?"I'm no expert but I think it means something like - Vis 1500 meters with unlimited Vis to the WestAndy B Andy Brockbank
December 25, 200322 yr HelloThe first line is indeed telling you that visibility is 1500 metres BUT visibility to the west is at least 10 kilometres (9999). Moreover, RVR(runway visual range) for runway 08 is 1500 metres. I don't think AS can simulate visibility in one direction being different than the prevailing visibility so I guess that's why you couldn't see a thing:)RegardsMiltos PagkourelisAthens, Greece
