Wind direction at Airport Level

Goodmonring,Something I have noticed with the MR1. Metar says winds from 050/14 both at Active sky and at the scrolling line in the FS, BUT the indications I get in the cockpit instruments as well at the FS is different by almost 10 degres 060/14. This is happening to many airports around the globe not only in one or two. I have cleared the weather from FSUIPC before running active sky. Any ideas?Chris

Hi Chris,Are you taking into account that FS reports magnetic wind direction and that AS and the scrolling line reports true wind direction? As you move farther from the prime meridian the difference will increase.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Hi,Yep, Jim has it right. Difference will also increase based on latitude. The closer to the magnetic north pole you are, the greater the "magnetic variation".Suggest taking a look at the included aviation weather guide for a bit more information on magnetic variation as it pertains to winds reports.Hope that helps!-Damian

welcome to the real world. winds are NEVER exactly as in the metarreports, not even the same as ATIS winds.Greetings, Eric

Not only that, but even when the tower gives you wind direction and strength it will be different from what you get in the cockpit. Local geographic features will change the winds, and also the reporting mechanism may be miles from the approach or departure end of the runway. Bob
