Winds and temp above FL390

Featured Replies

I might be wrong about this, but to me it seems both winds and temps are to high above this flightlevel. From what I understand ASV extends the FL390 winds and temps up to FL500, and another layer at 80000ft.By looking at forecasts for FL450 and FL600+ the winds and temps at FL450 are to high. I know that the temp rises again above a certain point. Comparing to ASV temp and wind speed at FL500 the temps are around 5C to high, and winds are 10-30kt to high.So my questions would be. Are there no sources for winds above FL390? If not, would it be possible to program some randomness, within the averages I found, into the flightlevels above this and add more layers?JT

Hi JT,Correct, the data does not (currently) exist for such levels and we use the FL390 data and a formula based on standard atmospheric conditions and assumptions to simulate them. We originally programmed such formulas based on feedback from multiple developers of high-level aircraft add-ons including Concorde and through significant testing and tweaking we determined we had it very close at went with it. Of course, when atmospheric conditions sway from standard (or normal wind variations exist) there will be discrepancies. We are always improving our data collection and distribution system, however, and plan to soon have such upper-level data to work with, followed by improvements to the AS client to accurately depict this. Not sure on a time-frame but it is in the works! Thanks for your feedback..Best,
