January 5, 200620 yr Hi,Belive this has been discussed before but what exactly is the reason the download process is so slow when downloading online weather when FS is not started compared to when FS is already running? It's a HUGE difference and lately I've been downloading the weather before I start FS to have ASv6 update all textures with the wx-influenced theme but it get's a bit annoying to have to sit and wait for this download before every flight. Of course not a big problem, just wish it would be as fast as it is when FS is already running...
January 5, 200620 yr Hi Web,I am not sure. Some say it is the processor priority.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6...development.jpg http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-proud.jpg http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-beta.jpg
January 5, 200620 yr Author Hi Jim,OK...but doesn't it sound strange that the download is slower when nothing else but ASv6 is running and faster when FS and all other add-on's are fired up?Also I have trouble beliving that the bottleneck for a network connection would be the CPU.Well...thanks anyway for your answer.
January 6, 200620 yr Commercial Member Hi,I know, it doesn't make much sense. Here is my latest theory on this quirk: We are using a Win32 api sleep function call to throttle back the download byte-by-byte process in order to prevent performance problems during this step (when FS is running). This sleep process, for some unknown reason, only on certain setups, slows down more WHEN the application has CPU availability. When FS is running, it takes ALL CPU availability, and our sleep process now has less capability to slow itself down, so it actually speeds up. I can't duplicate this on my test machines but we do have a few beta testers who get this.Basically, because the download process is technical designed to take approximately 1 minute (for various reasons), we haven't made it a priority to adjust this. We actually prefer to have things take about 1 minute long to provide appropriate service capability with our server and network systems during peak times. We'll re-evaluate all this soon and see if we can get things more consistent and perhaps even a little more streamlined and faster, somewhere in the realm of a consistent 30 seconds per download at maximum bandwidth (i.e. cable modem).Best, Damian ClarkHiFi Simulation Technologies
January 6, 200620 yr Author OK Damian, thanks for your explanation. I'm looking forward to whatever you might come up with regarding this issue and in the meantime I'll continue enjoying your great program :-)All the best,
