Hard horizon

Featured Replies

First of all let me say thank you very much, just flew into Munster (EDDG) in 8000m with low cloud, absolutely excellent, can't be faulted.BUT.......I am still really struggling with a hard horizon above 10,000ft.I have the vis option in FS display setup to minimum (60miles), and the AS6 option set to 59 miles. It all works fine at low altitude, but as soon as I climb up I get a hard horizon (regardless of what the closest ground station is giving). In AS6 it seems to be a little better (I get a nice layer of haze on the horizon, but where the bottom of the haze meets the ground there is a really hard line which does not appear at lower altitudes - will try and post a screen shot soon).I managed to partially get rid of the problem in ASV, (someone suggested on this forum that the only way to get rid of this problem is to set the max vis option in ASV to 29 miles). And sure enough this worked, but it has the downside that when at high altitude you only saw haze ahead and got a very pronounced ring effect. In order to see the ground whist cruising you had to look down at over 45 degrees.Select any value above 29 mile vis, and straight away it went back to max vis at altitude with a hard horizon.I have not tried the 29 mile fix yet with AS6, as I would rather put up with a hard horizon than be flying in fog at altitude. Can anyone help?????

It is always easier to explain with pictures. You can see the weather selected from the bottom picture (my setup, and the current weather). At low level (3300ft) it looks great (although the metar is showing 9000 meters with no cloud, so maybe it is a little on the foggy side)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138582.jpgAs you get higher and climb out of the murk (5000ft) there is a lovely blended effect of the horizon and the sky (with a layer of haze)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138583.jpgThen, at 10000ft there is a sudden change and there is a definate hardening of the horizonhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138584.jpgAt 35000ft there is a definate hard horizon, no blending between ground and skyhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138585.jpgHere is the weather used and my setup. As mentioned in my previous post, set the max vis in ASV to 29, and the ground always blends in nicely with the sky (with a layer of haze around the horizon)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/138586.jpg

I just made another flight into Berlin, and this time the horizon was a lot better.Regardless of height, the horizon was really nicely blended, with a nice ring of (very white) haze blending the sky into the ground.I am now completely confused. Why does it not always do this?????

Hi,Maybe you were using random or wx-influenced theme and a "Soft Horizon" sky set was used?Or perhaps the visibility was just overall lower with less sharp horizon. It is quite normal that higher visibility yields harder horizon lines... this is not something we can change at the time, but you can always reduce your max vis appropriately as desired..Best,

I understand what you are saying, but most of the time, even when the ground station directly below is giving 5000m, as soon as you go above 10000ft the visibility goes to maximum with a hard horizon (big blue line like FS5).I don't mind having a visibility of 59nm (or more), but just wish that the ground would blend into the sky as it does in real life flying (and as it does really nicely at low altitude (using am using an ATi 850 card, I believe Nvidia users don't have this problem)).It just seems that above 10000ft, the blending effects (most of the time) disapear. There is still a band of haze on the horizon which would normally blend ok, but the bottom of this haze layer (where the haze meets the ground looks awful - a horid hard blue line.Sorry to moan, the product is simply outstanding, but this would just be the icing on the cake. I am not alone in this, I remember a thread on ASV which several people were complaining of the same thing. I think there is also one on AS6. As I said, someone pointed out that reducing ASV vis to 29 max always gave a blended horizon, but this is not realistic as 29 nm vis at altitude looks aweful. You can't please some people ;-)
