Metar confusion

Featured Replies

This Sunday (Oct 21) around 21:00Z, OITT-Tabriz Intl (Iran) was reported by AS6.5 to suffer 150KT winds. On final, my PC-12 was 'stopped' in air like a chopper :-0. Going around, the ATIS confirmed the situation, which was below 2000ft above the field.Pausing FS, I looked for the real OITT Metar and it said the winds were calm.Refreshing AI6.5, the 150KT winds were still there. But I noted that some part of the Metar format was a bit different than the ordinary format. The date/time string digits were correctly 212150Z (day 21 time 21:50) and the remaining digits were somewhat confused (wind speed in mph). So, I guess, AS6.5 took 212150 as wind at the reported 212/150KT.Today I could not find this Metar from this Sunday 21, at Tabriz, to show you the whole string. But I'm sure you know how to do that and verify the error source. Thanks for your attentionHeron

Hi Heron,Looks like a freak hurricane in Iran.. all kinds of strange weather out there lately! ;) j/kYou are most likely correct, that the METAR string was invalidly formatted and thus invalidly parsed by AS. I'll certainly look it up and see if I can spot anything for potential improvement in the parsing logic. Usually however such issues are very temporary and caused by manual human input errors.Best,

Hi Damian,A very rare episode, I must say. At least, never heppened to me in all those years.Today things are back to normal in Tabriz:OITT 231850Z 06004KT CAVOK 12/03 Q1021 A3016I'm sure this metar will be perfect for flying ;-). Next time I will check not only the departure weather, but as well the destination and alternate metars, as real pilots do. And also tune the ATIS.The big difference is that, in FS, Mother Nature depends on metars and, in real life, metars depend on Mother Nature, and lets keep things that way!PS. What I was doing in Tabriz? I'm flying along the Marco Polo journey with a Pilatus PC-12. From Venice-Italy to Beijing-China. For sure Mr Polo must have also endured terrible storms along this way.Regards,Heron
