Explaination of actual weather

Featured Replies

Hi all,I was tootling about the Caribbean when I had to go around from an ILS to Trinidad (TTPP) due lack of visual. I was shocked, the ATIS was giving 7000m in light RN. ActiveSky (Build 536) METAR was "TTPP 071432Z 35900KT SHRA SCT018 BKN038 26/23 Q1016 RMK DYNAMIC TAF ELEMENT RMK OLD RMK SUPPRESSED" and the TAF "TTPP 071000Z 071212 09012KT 9999 SCT022 TEMPO 7000 SHRA SCT018 BKN038 BECMG 0002 00000KT FEW018".What could possibly be giving me a visibility problem on a Cat1 ILS?Further inspection revealed an actual weather of Wind: 359 True, 0 KtsVis: 162 Meters, 0 SMClouds: 1800 Scattered, 3800 BrokenPrecip: Moderate RainTemp: 26C Dew: 23CPressure: 1016 mb, 30.01 inches!!! Note the Vis !!!162m!!!Where did that come from? I figured it was simulating a rain shower coming through (as per the TAF and actual) but 162m in moderate rain! Have I unwittingly found a bug or have I simply set it up wrong? I have enclosed a screenshot of ASV.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/166325.jpgCan anyone offer any assistance?Kind regards,Ian

Just as a follow up.I remained in the hold for over an hour (to let the TEMPO clear) and still no joy.I "Fetched" an update of the weather at TTPP and it said all was fine. I tried refreshing the weather. All to no avail... still 162m.In desperation I closed ASV and restarted. Hey presto, everything back to normal.Am I a complete muppet or have I found some anomaly?Regards,Ian

If you look at my posts regarding wind gusts (post name aca856) and also regarding not getting correct weather at destination...there does seem to be something interesting 'happening' when AS6 is closed and re-started. It has been my contention that AS6 is somehow 'clinging' to or clogged up with old data and will not refresh destination weather as expected...or...the range/alt supression is creating problems with updates at destination...unless the user shuts down and re-starts.You were in a holding pattern near destination aiport...that was maybe range suppression blocking the destination airport from updating. Why AS6 lets range suppression supercede the destination weather as processed in the AS6 plan I am not sure, but this is how I understand AS6 works. I did ask in another post what is the point of setting destination airports in the weather processing if range suppression is going to over-ride it...makes no sense but could be an FS9 limitaion I suppose. If you have used FSMeteo, you may recall the destination distance locking option...destination weather can then be forced. I am not saying FSMeteo is better, I am saying it was a nice option to have, easy to understand with the right results. The folks as AS support have been great in getting back to me...but I do suspect there is more to the puzzle/issue than what we have seen so far.In your case, I do notice something I dont see in mine...that is the TAF forecasting comment in the METAR...do you have that turned on? Rob.

Rob,Hmmm, interesting comments...I think I have two issues:1) The TAF dynamic updates giving me 162m vis when 7000m and Rain showers were the worst part of the forecast. I have TAF processing turned on.2) The fact that it didn't sort itself out after a while. Because I was holding over the outer marker, maybe range suppressing was doing something but ASV knew nothing about my route so I can't imagine how.I've no idea about the inner workings, are there any settings that could influence either of these? Thanks for you help,Ian

I am not knowledgeable regarding AS6...would rather let the AS6 people chime in here.I can tell you that range supression, so I have been told, will ignore weather within the range, thus holding over the airport will mean you will not get the airport weather...until you re-start AS6.This is why I was wondering what the point of setting destination in AS6 is if range suppression forces AS6 to ignore the weather when you get to the destination.Something is out of whack me thinks.

Hi Ian,Thanks for the detailed post, especially the screenshot. Those really help sometimes!A few things about your situation:1. In Online Mode TAF data is rarely used. Only if the TAF is newer then the METAR such as in Offline Mode or the station METAR is missing for long periods of time.2. Let's look at the METAR. Guess what is missing? Yep, the visibility value, and when that happens AS has no choice but to put zero for the visibility, which is 162m, the smallest value FS can represent.3. Why didn't refreshing help? Because you were under your suppression altitude and that is what suppression does, it prevents data from being refreshed in FS, so that conditions do not suddenly change.4. Why did things jump to normal on a restart of AS? Because when you did that, you removed the suppression situation and you triggered a totally fresh start of AS.So what does this mean? That you flew into a station with an incomplete METAR and because of suppression FS was unable to get complete data. For the data I can suggest that you force the Secondary Server because this will force a new download on every Refresh.I hope this helps to explain things!Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Jim,Thanks very much for your reply, it really helps my understanding of what happened.1. Good to know, thanks. In a future release could there be a way for the TAF to be used to fill in missing data from the current METAR?2. I see, could that default value be something we could change in the options page or even just something like 5k? 162m is pretty rare.3. Ah, I see, I've adjusted my suppression settings to suit.4. Makes sense. Thanks again for your input here Jim, it's made things much clearer.Regards,Ian

Hi,You can limit the minimum visibility value on the AS Options page. That would prevent this. But at the same time it would also prevent the actual occurance of this as well, eg. when the visibility is really that low.Not real sure if we can program that type of error checking, but it is worth a try.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/
