Metar decoding error

Featured Replies

Hi,Using B522 I get the following:ENHK 051020Z 14022KT DRSN CAVOK M00/M07 Q1020Decoded:Wind: 140 True, 22 KtsVis: 162 Meters, 0 SMClouds: NonePrecip: NoneTemp: 0C Dew: -7CPressure: 1020 mb, 30.12 inchesHow's this possible?

Hi JT,Played a bit with the Wx Configurator to figure this out. AS needs a actual cloud report in order to generate the precipitation. CAVOK or NSC did not work and I did not try CLR. DRSN is OK.DR is for low drifting snow, so with the winds the way they were, I would say this is possible, with enough snow on the ground already.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Jim,Wonder if this is a result of bad metar code use and AS' way of decoding. If indeed the vis is poor due to blowing snow then CAVOK should not be used. If the weather was indeed clear then AS should use CAVOK regardless of any other information.I say CAVOK should supercede any other code in the metar.

Hi JT,I almost asked this the first time and didn't, so I'll ask it now:!! What do you find as the issue with the METAR and the way AS decoded it?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Sorry Jim, I should have made it clearer.Look at the decoded visibility, its 162m 0SM. That can't be if CAVOK is used ;)

Hi JT,There is no visibility listed in the METAR so AS has no data to use, therefore it defaults to zero.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/

Hi,Actually if visibility is not included it should default to 10SM not zero. I will look into this.. thanks for the info Jan!-Damian

Hi All,I bet it's the fact that the DRSN is in the visibility location of the METAR report. Using Wx Configurator you can replace any visibility with precipitation and the visibility will show zero.Edit: Move the DRSN to the other side of the CAVOK and visibility is reported as 10SM!Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://www.fseconomy.com/
