February 16, 200818 yr Gentlemen:I'd like to add some additional observations regarding winds and temps aloft straying far from reality. I own both AS 6.5 (which I use on FS9) and ASX. My FSX and FS9 installations are on two separate computers.I have been using AS 6.5 primarily, until recently. I had many FSX issues, which prevented me from really using the new sim at all (much less with the real world WX provided by ASX.) Most of those issues involved VISTA on the FSX computer. I have recently removed VISTA, and installed XP (SP2) which has solved almost all my FSX problems. My ASX installation is updated to SP2, and I am using the latest FSUIPC 4.25 with Peter's new wind smoothing fix applied.I have flown several flights using ASX in the past few days, all between airports in the US northeast and upper midwest. At present, the airmass in this region is quite cold - both at the surface and aloft. ASX has accurately given me the current surface WX (and cloud conditions) for each of my flights - BUT I have noted that once airborne, the OAT shoots up to around 50 degrees fahrenheit. In the climb, the OAT remains much higher than one would expect to see at this time of year, and remains high until getting up around FL 180.As an experiment, I initiated at flight parked at KCLE (in FSX). This was done shortly after 1200Z, 16 FEB 2008. Below is an "official" list of winds and temps aloft for KCLE from the www.aviationweather.gov web site, compared to what ASX was showing:The first column is altitude, second column NCEP winds and temps aloft, then ASX winds and temps for the same level.3000 3012 241@20 +12.16000 3031 -8 255@25 +5.89000 3043 -13 268@31 +6.512000 2950 -13 278@38 -2.718000 3070 -23 263@39 -16.524000 2985 -35 281@60 -26As you can see - the winds and temps aloft are far removed from the real-world data. The upper air conditions look much closer to what one might see in June or July... especially in terms of the temperatures aloft below FL 180.Out of curiosity, I fired up AS 6.5 and downloaded the current conditions for KCLE. The winds and temps aloft were EXACTLY identical to what I was seeing in ASX... i.e., wind directions and speeds completely "off" and temperatures much too high. The point being that the data is not being modified by any weather smoothing routines in ASX or AS 6.5. I verified this by looking at the raw data downloaded from the HiFi server in the AS 6.5 file "current_wx_snapshot.txt", which shows exactly the same winds and temp aloft data for KCLE as shown above. My conclusion is that for some reason, your server is providing incorrect data for upper air conditions at the present time. METAR reports are right on the money, but upper air conditions are completely "off". I checked several other loctations in the AS 6.5 snapshot file, and the same holds true.Something you might want to investigate. I assume you are taking a raw feed of WMO upper-air observations and/or forecasts into your server - perhaps a problem with the incoming data?Jim Barrett Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist.
