Is there a known issue with AS6.5 Icing and some add ons?

Featured Replies

I want to first make it clear that I don't know which software is responsible for this problem, whether it is AS6.5 or the LeonardoSH MD-82. I've recently started flying this aircraft again and I'm having trouble on climbout. I posted on the LeonardoSH forums and a few people (not the developers) said they'd had the exact same problem with other high level add-on aircraft and AS6.5 including the PMDG 737s and 747 and Lvl-D 767.The problem is this - on climbout I'm tooling along, climbing at a steady rate, 250kias, all my anti-icing and de-icing equipment is configured as it should be (active) etc. Then all of a sudden my airspeed will drop to zero even though all my pitot heat, anti-ice, bleed air, etc is turned on and the plane will indicate a stall when one should never occur (good airspeed, normal angle of attack, etc).As I said I first believed this was a problem with the Maddog2006 from Leonardo but a few guys posted that they'd had the exact same problems with other high quality big iron addons, so I thought I might check over here to see if you guys know of any incompatibility issues.Activesky is still my single favorite add-on so I don't want to be misunderstood, I'm just wondering if you guys have heard of this. All of my personal evidence indicates that this is an issue with the plane not Activsky, but the posts of other guys on the forum indicated it might be otherwise.

Hi,Yes... this is a known issue, caused by freezing temps and moisture creating pitot icing conditions. Not all aircraft properly enable the pitot-heat system within the FS Aircraft simulation system, it really depends on the systems programming. But you can always enable it with SHIFT-H.Best,

I am still suffering with this problem.I know that I can remove it by turning off all icing, but I like the realism of it.I get this with both the Maddog2006 and PMDG 737NG.I have checked in FS9 that Shift-H is assigned to pitot, but it still doesn't help at times.Any more hints?

Hi again,I can't recall hearing of a zero-airspeed (frozen pitot ram air) condition when shift-H and pitot heat was indeed turned on. Of course if the pitot is frozen and you turn on pitot heat after, it takes a little while for the ice to melt. But it should always clear eventually.Does this occur with a specific weather situation/area only or is it all the time? Best,

It happened again last night just by KPT VOR (east of EDNY) whilst flying the Maddog2006.Usually this problem manifests itself just after take off for me. The airspeed will drop to 0, all the warnings go off and the wind noise in the flight deck disapears. This usually lasts about 30 seconds, then clears itself.Yestderday I made sure that Shift-H was mapped to pitot heaters in the FS menu. I turned them on at the same time as turning on the Pitot heaters on the overhead panel just after start and got airborne 10 minutes later (plenty of time to take effect). The weather at EDNY was +10 and dew point +6 (so no real icing conditions).whilst climbing through around 11,000 feet (some cloud around, but temp not too low) it kicked in again and I lost all airspeed, autopilot put aircraft into a dive and it all went very wrong. I tried recycling Shift-P a couple of times but didn't seem to help. After about 30 seconds it cleared itself and for the rest of the flight it was back to normal (even though I later flew through heavy cloud in -10 temperatures). This happens with the PMDG aircraft too, and the Flight 1 MD80. I did dissable the icing in your menu for a while, but the Maddog has such great anti ice systems simulated (with frost graphics on window even) it is a shame to miss out on this.I have done some searching on the net and various forums, and they all point towards AS6 and say the only way of solving this is by dissabling the icing in the AS6 menu.I have also tried tweaking icing in FSUIPC, but this makes no difference.Hope you can solve this soon,ThanksNeil

Hi Neil,Indeed if surface temps were 10, at 5000ft+ you're in ice. Flying through cloud? That's visible moisture, perfect for airframe/pitot icing. The icing simulation is working, but unfortunately these aircraft for whatever reason are not dealing with the ice properly. Not sure what is going on.Have you contacted such vendors to see if there is any known information on the subject?Best,
