March 3, 200818 yr I'm running FSX with Acceleration and all the latest updates. I'm also running Active Sky X with SP2 installed on it.Whenever there is a decent cloud cover going on, my clouds will randomly disappear and reappear CONSTANTLY. It really ruins the point of weather when I can magically see an unlimited distance in every direction every 30 seconds because all the clouds cease to exist, only to fade back in moments later. I used Fraps to record a video of the problem. You can see that there's a fairly large cloud bank directly ahead of me on my descent over the coast of Iceland. The clouds are no more than a few miles ahead, and I'm running on the maximum cloud render distance of 110 miles, so this isn't an issue with FSX deciding not to draw them. The issue also doesn't occur when using the built in FSX weather without ASX running.Link to video: (I can also provide a direct link to the full resolution video (14.9MB) hosted on my website, if you'd prefer.)How do I fix this? I REALLY love how realistic ASX makes my weather, but this problem is totally ruining it for me. Nothing takes the fun out of an IFR approach through pea soup clouds and fog like having them all disappear suddenly and giving you a clear view to the runway you're approaching.
March 3, 200818 yr Hi,Sorry for the problem. Do you have Tool Tips On in FSX? If so, please try with this Off.Does this happen if you use FSX weather? Please let us know.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/
March 3, 200818 yr I'll try disabling tooltips and let you know if that helps :)No, I don't experience this problem if I'm using the built in FSX weather without ASX.Thanks :)
March 7, 200818 yr I started a thread similar to this weeks ago. I've since been trying the Sp3 beta and still having the same issues. I've tried using FSUIPC's visibility and turning of ASX visibility smoothing (as suggested). Still have problems.* Weather is redrawn every few minutes* ASX takes about 10 minutes to parse the current weather (why?)Needless to say I'm an unhappy camper and I'm sick of trying to get it to work.Byemitchell Mitchell Ward ____________________________________________________ Q9550 (@3.8), 9800GTX, 4G DDR2 1066, W7RC FSX/Acceleration/REX textures/REX weather/MyTrafficX/RC4.3
March 9, 200818 yr ASX has had much written and verified within these forums about the poor overcast rendering and cloud popping. We are left right now to waiting for a patch to come out that deals with it. So far 3 patches since release and no gains have been made on this most important topic.Steve

March 10, 200818 yr Yea, me too and this product has caused me to take a different position on future purchases that relies more on initial in-depth comments before I drop my money into a product. What do they say? "Patience is a virtue." I relied on previous products from HiFi and jumped right in on day one. And although ASX is a high quality product that has all the right options it just does not make FSX weather look like current conditions and I believe they are not alone. It is my understanding that all 3rd party wx programs have identical problems. So maybe the lesson learned from this is when MS changes their version of FS it is best to pause and let the developers chew on it for awhile before buying addons.Steve
April 12, 200818 yr Although I was not particularly happy with ASX when it first came out (when compared with AS6.5) this is now the only remaining major issue I have. Hopefully it can be sorted with (another) SP.Dan. Best Regards, Dan Parkin.
April 14, 200818 yr Personally, I believe the problems are ultimately caused by the way the FSX weather engine works... Some of the issues I've noticed are:1) Clouds are basically just billboards.(To see this, create a situation where you're flying quite low above a cloud layer, switch to outside view and position the camera directly above the airplane - you will see the clouds below rotating as you fly past them)Not really an issue in itself - it would most likely be much more expensive to try to render lots of true 3d clouds, and the billboards create quite a convincing illusion. However, because clouds are just billboards, creating a convincing overcast will be hard, if not impossible. The clouds are of limited size, and at maximum coverage (i.e. overcast), there are simply still not enough clouds to leave no holes. And even if it was possible to generate that many clouds, you would probably get overdraw issues and such, seeing one cloud covering another when it shouldn't.I tried to manually create some types of weather scenarios to depict full overcast through the FSX manual weather (like creating multiple cumulus layers above one another, butting a thin 0SM visibility layer between two cumulus layers, etc), but none of them really worked out.Another effect of the cloud billboards is that they are faded out when you get too close. Which means that you can never be "inside" a cloud.2) There is not really a built-in smoothing of the weather as you switch from one METAR area to another. This has been the cause of the wind-shift issues, as well as some visibility issues - i.e., when you pass from a CAVOK area to an area with reduced visibility, you don't "transition" into the low visibility, but it's rather like flying into a bowl of soup... This would probably have been quite easy and not too expensive to fix in the engine, but for some reason ACES opted out (or not even considered it).Sadly, while Pete Dowson managed to nail the wind shift issue, implementing graduated visibility seems to be a harder nut to crack. Pete has basically given up on the subject, afaik, and Hifi's approach of changing the visibility in the METARs based on the altitude and update them every few seconds seems to cause a lot of cloud redraws for me. Basically, I've all but given up on the subject...
