Hi, Ive been using asx for some time now and it just isnt working right. The problem is the way weather is displayed. Before each flight I check the radar image, the sat image, and metars for the route from aviationwaether.gov. By the time I start flying I have a good idea of what the weather is going to look like, or should look like. The problem is that asx just isnt displaying weather correctly. Problem #12008-3-24_16-53-23-236.jpgDuring the cruise at 350 or so the visibility will go from unlimited to what you see in the above picture. I have tried turning fog sim on/off, virtual stations on/off and visibility graduation on/off, but it doesnt help my situation. The other main problem is that the weather is amazingly different from the sat/rad and metars that I use for planning. Heres the satallite image for KATL. 200%38%30405_2045_MGM_vis.jpgAs you can see the entire state of georgia should be saturated in clouds, and the metar for katl at the time was showing 600 ovc, and that was even displayed in asx, but thats not what I was seeing at all, there were a few large patches of overcast on the way up to atl, but not nearly enough, and no towering cumulous like there should have been (rad image to back that up next). Here is what I was seeing at atl, 600ovc? I think not.2008-4-5_16-40-11-592.jpg2008-4-5_16-40-3-171.jpg2008-4-5_16-40-7-452.jpgHeres a live cam from atlanta, ga. towercam1_640x480.jpgI think we can all agree something isnt quite right here? And for the record, I did setup a flight plan and import it.Radar image mentioned before, there should have been toweing cumulonimbus on the trip up, but thats not what I was seeing.JAX_0.pngHopefully we can figure this one out, im using fsx sp2, with windows vista 64, and asx sp2.

Your problem is very similar to the problem that I am reporting in my post above.Bill

I Earned My Spurs in Vietnam

I dont have exact copies of the metars, but the relevant information is included in my post, it happens everwhere on every flight. The weather is always the same, clear and tranquil, with sometimes scattered clouds. I sometimes even see lightning strikes that dont even come out of a cloud. Active sky isnt displaying overcast conditions, and clouds the way it should. EDIT:I have been playing around with asx and have noticed that metar data is often wrong, where is asx getting its metar data from? Sometimes the metar will be correct and sometimes it will be very incorrect, it will often shift drastically. For example at KCDW asx is displaying the metar as : KCDW 2100ZZ 09013KT 10SM FEW034 SCT060 32/10 A2988But aviationweather.gov is displaying: KCDW 061953Z AUTO 04007KT 010V090 10SM OVC032 09/02 A3026 RMK AO2 SLP255 T00940022 TSNOBUT THIS ISNT ALWAYS THE CASE:Sometimes asx shows the correct metar, but still will not display the correct weather, the clouds are always few or clear, never overcast.

Hi Mike,Here is what I got in ASX just now:KCDW 062253Z 08007KT 10SM OVC032 07/02 A3027NOAA has this:KCDW 062353Z 09007KT 060V130 10SM OVC032 07/02 A3028 RMK AO2 SLP259 T00720022 10100 20072 53006So that is working. Please post your ASX.cfg file.Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/

Thanks for the reply, As I said in my post, sometimes it works and displays the correct metar, but other times it doesnt, either way both metars display the same result in fsx, I cannot get true overcast layers to render. The weather always is the same. Heres my cfg://ASX Configuration File[Options]AutomaticDownloads = TrueAutomaticDownloadInterval = 10CAVOKCloudGenerationPercent = 50NoDataCloudGenerationPercent = 50CirrusCloudGenerationPercent = 50MaximumCloudLayers = 20MinimumCloudTurbulencePercent = 100MaximumCloudTurbulencePercent = 100MinimumCloudIcingPercent = 26MaximumCloudIcingPercent = 100MaximumSurfaceWindSpeed = 100MinimumWindTurbulencePercent = 35MaximumWindTurbulencePercent = 100MinimumWindShearPercent = 0MaximumWindShearPercent = 50MinimumVisibilitySM = 0MaximumVisibilitySM = 200UpdateRange = 500DynamicRateofChangePercent = 50WakeTurbulenceStrength = 0DepictHurricanes = TrueCreateVirtualStations = TrueEnhanceRouteCoverage = TrueMaximumUpperVisibilitySM = 200VATSIMDownloads = FalseEnableSkyScapeMode = FalseUseSkyScapeforStratus = FalseStratusCloudOccurrencePercent = 20ForceHighPriority = TrueDisableWindsAloft = FalseEnableWindSmoothing = TrueEnableVisibilityGraduation = TrueEnableFogLayerSimulation = TrueEnableWindShiftStabilization = True

Thanks again for the reply,My frames are unlocked, 25-35 fps. Cloud coverage is set to maximum, draw distance all the way to the right. About the metars, I have posted them above.

I am having a similar issue with visibility, particularly high altitudes. The view of the sky looks like the image in problem #1, very hazy white with little ground visibility. I too have played with the visibility graduation and fog without success. Hopefully there is an answer

Hi,Once you are above a certain altitude, all ground visibility drops away because of FSX and the same thing is true in FS04. It is just the way FS handles visibility and there is nothing we can do about that issue.Edit: John, at what altitude does your visibility layer go away?Thanks,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/

Hi,May I ask what locking the frame rate has to do with weather? And no, I dont use the same metar for every flight, why would I do that? The point I have been trying to make here is that regardless of what the metar says, the sky is always generally the same, that means if it is listed as broken in the metar, the clouds are few, that means if it is listed as ovc in the metar the clouds are few. And I find it hard to believe that fsx should be taking all of the blame for the visibility problems, because with default fsx weather the visibility doesnt go to near zero when im not in a cloud or anywhere near one at 35000 feet.

Hi Mike,If your system cannot keep up, the first thing dropped out are clouds. One way around this is to lock the FPS at a lower limit. You keep saying, "the information is in post 1", so I asked if you are using the same METARs all the time.Try this, find some OVC weather and go there in FSX and use the FSX weather system and see what shows up on your system. My comment about the visibility was not directed to anything you have posted. It was for the other user. Let's first see about this clouds issue.Thanks!Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-community-sigbanner.jpghttp://www.hifisim.com/

Alright, Ill play around with it and give you some more updates. About the visibility, I am having the same issue thats johnz63 is, so that is why I responded. In his post he says that he is having the same problem.

First, I never had the visibility issue with FS2004 or FSX before installing ASX. I would cruise at 35,000 ft and I would see a sharp image of the ground, obviously you can't make out much detail, but it certainly wasn't hazy white. The hazy white problem negatively impacts cloud detail, the horizon, and in some situations I experienced the same problem on the ground.
