June 12, 200322 yr This is just an inquiry... After starting the engines and they are at idle I will hear this tap sound every so often. I am just curious what old antique sound is the B-25 making other than the grumbling of the radial engines? I don't mind the sound at all it is all wonderful. I am just trying to understand the old girl and what she is trying to tell me.....Thank you for the reply.
June 13, 200322 yr What you are most likly hearing is the engine occasionaly miss firing. It sounds very real for your typical "round" engine.. Mike B.
June 13, 200322 yr Commercial Member That distinctive popping noise is caused, or at least amplified, by the B-25's short exhaust stacks. You only hear it at idle. From inside the aircraft, standing right behind the pilots where I did to make these recordings, it is really loud. But then, everything about those engines is LOUD! BT is a very rare bird in that it has the original short stacks all the way around, rather than the post-war collector ring which took the top stacks and dumped them into one big pipe outboard on the nacelles. That was an effort to tame the decibels, and the lack of them makes BT much louder than almost all other B-25's flying today.
