March 25, 200422 yr I'm getting closer to ordering my new computer parts, here's another set of specs that I'd like to submit for your recommendations:Motherboard: ABit NF7-S nForce2 ULTRA 400FSB SATA AGP8X w/ RAID, LAN, USB2.0, & AudioCPU: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ CPU (512K L2 CACHE )Memory: 1GB DDR400 RAMVideo: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MBHard Drive: Seagate 120GB 7200RPM Serial ATA 150 8MB CacheSound Card: Creative Labs SB LIVE VALUE 5.1Any suggestions?Thank you in advance.
March 26, 200422 yr Hi,It sounds very good except for maybe one item, the Sound Card. I have seen a number of posts by people concerning problems with the SB Live 5.1. Possibly due to newer versions of Direct X that have been made since that cards release years ago? Anyway, I would suggest you get an Audigy 2. You will get the best performance with the least problems with an Audigy 2 card. You won't be sorry! Then again, perhaps if you go with the SB Live 5.1 perhaps you find that you have no problem with it. I don't know. The Audigy 2 is only a suggestion. Do whatever makes you feel best.Good Luck,Jim
March 27, 200422 yr Easily done since 95 % of the onboard solutions sucks. The bad thing is that the nforce soundstorm sound was apparently a bit to good so it won
March 27, 200422 yr If possible, get the Athlon 64 and a VIA motherboard instead. More future proof and better performance than the Athlon XP.About the sound card:Some people have serious problems with the SBLive cards. I didn't have any problems with mine but I gained a few FPS after getting rid of it.The NForce2 boards have built-in sound. In terms of features and performance, they are just about as good as the Audigy2.In terms of audio quality, they are quite horrible, at least if you're using analog speakers. Most mobo manufacturers use cheap Realtek DAC's which produce very poor quality. The quality is comparable, but slightly lower than the SBLive which isn't exactly known for great quality. This isn't a problem if you're using digital speakers. If you use analog speakers I only recommend the NForce2 built-in sound if you don't use the computer to listen to music, watch movies etc. where sound is important. -
March 29, 200422 yr Nforce 2 sound quality on digital speakers is as good as Audigys and thus not as far apart from the Audigy 2:s ;) Plus you can make up for it by getting Home theater speakers which just about always is better than computer speakers and are specially designed for DVD:s and music.Believe me my nforce 2 soundstorm/Digitheatre Platinum combo rocks. Audigy 2 + headphones don
