Advice on Graphic card upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi,I dont want to tread on old ground and start up an old discussion on which is the best graphics card but:I have a Gigabyte GA7VRXP 4xAGP 1gig ram Athlon 2600XP and currently use a Geforce Ti4200 with 64meg Ram. I am in a position to purchase a better card and with the introduction of the Nvidia 6800 I was looking at the Gainwood FX5900 Ultra 256 meg ( should drop in price). Has anyone followed this upgrade path and found any real benefits as far as max density in FS and increased frame rates. I am happy to stay with Nvidia but it may be a large expense only to find a small increase in fps. I certainly cannot upgrade the mobo and cpu to get more processing clock cycles.Currently using addon Heathrow scenery and PMDG 737NG in 2D cockpit, I get 5 fps with the sliders set to 80% full density. There are plenty of sites that show benchmarks for the DOOM type games but not for FS. If anyone has followed this path I would appreciate some feedback. Many thanksMike DouglasLiverpool, UK

9800 PRO 128 mb without a question.256 mb video cards don

Agree also. The 9800 Pro is about as cheap as it's going to get. It'll be a deleted model soon as they're already using the `old` 9800XT chips in those cards and once they're gone, they're gone and it'll be low-order X800 cards at considerably greater cost. Buy now, get the 256meg version to pretty much guarantee it's got a 9800XT core (not all the 128's have, almost all the 256's do), flash the BIOS and get yourself an XT for little money.Allcott
