Video Card Upgrade Advice Requested

Featured Replies

I currently have an Nvidia Ti4400, 4X AGP (128MB DDR) on my system. The rest of the system is an MSI KT6V motherboard, AMD 2600+, 512MB DDR. I saw an ATI Radeon 9600, 8X AGP (256MB DDR) for $129 USD. That sounds like a good price to me. My last two cards have been NVidia and I like them. But, I've read that ATI is better for FS9? I also saw an NVidia 5700 8X AGP (256MB DDR) for the same price. All the reviews are mixed and some favor one or another. So, it seems a toss up. Bottom-line, will it make much of a difference in my current system or should I stay with the Ti4400. Any suggestions/opinions?_________________

Wait until the new Nvidia 6800 and ATI Radeon x800 come out, it will cause the price of the ATI 9800's to drop big time, and then you'll be able to get one of those for the same price you'd be paying for a 9600 - the 9800 is way faster...

I don't know your motherboard specs but I have only 4XAGP on my ASUS motherboard. I have the ASUS V9670 TD card which is 8XAGP and 256Meg but I assume that 4XAGP is the maximum I will get from it because that is the limit allowed by the motherboard, at least in the BIOS options. Just thought it worth mentioning as it seems the only advantage it has over my previous MSI Ti4800 SE card is the doubling of the memory. Performance is better but I wouldn't say it's twice as good.

Hi! About prices. Prices on the 9800 PRO will be unlikely to go down. It will probably meet the same fate as the 9500 PRO and 9700 PRO. Prices stands still or go up.9800XT whill however go down in price. As it looks the X800se don

Look for a 9800 Pro with 256meg of onboard memory. There's a good chance it will have the same hardware as the XT. Flash the BIOS and you've got a 9800XT for next to no money.Details from some of the graphics tech forums.Allcott

However you are unlikely to see a performance difference between the 9800 PRO 128 or 9800 PRO 256. FS 2004 wasn

I just bought the ATI Radeon 9600XT at Best Buy the other day, and it works great. It's coupled with 1G RAM and a PentiumIV, 2.8-GB processor... and man is it smooth.I even have most of the cloud sliders all the way to the right. My ground scenery is clear and sharp and I have very rare stutters. It's been a loing climb up from the days of a 133-MHz Compaq machine, but it was worth it.It's so great to be able to load local weather and stuff.JohnNewburgh, IN
