May 15, 200422 yr http://www.guru3d.com/Seem to have cured the lag I was seeing when accessing the menu bar sometimes.Allcott
May 31, 200422 yr These are very good on my Ti4200-128 and have cured the picture distortion that happened every time I hit the alt button to bring up the menu bar.No problems that I can find.. pretty happy! Bert
May 31, 200422 yr To add to this, I am finding that I can now get 25 fps at 4XAA, so I am at last switching from 2XAA which I have been running for the past two years to 4XAA, 4XAF, and 1280x960x32 as my default. Bert
June 2, 200422 yr Is there any image quality improvement with these 61.12's? I've just 'upgraded' from an ageing Radeon 9700 (non Pro) to a Gainward Ultra/1100 FX 5900XT. Whilst I love the huge performance increase, I must say that I am shocked at the overall AA image quality. I've read before about how Nvidia suffers but I never realised as to quite how bad it could be where FS9 is concerned!!I'm currently using the 52.16's as they were reputed to have great image quality (on Guru3d), but I find that using 4xAA with this card it looks like 2xAA on the Radeon.....not nice!! Having read a few posts before concerning this Nvidia AA issue, it seems that 2x and 4x AA are the only settings that DON'T apply AA to 3d clouds...that sucks!! I have found that setting my card to 6xS AA gives good image quality, yet you can see a noticeable hit to the FPS whenever it gets a heavy build-up of cumulus clouds, whereas with 4xAA this doesn't happen so badly. I can now run consistantly ast 40FPS locked which is nice, except for in cloudy weather, where the FPS swing rapidly up and down from 005 to 40. Which is not so nice ;)Even though the old Radeon couldn't give much more than about 25 FPS, it didn't have the wild mood-swings with clouds whilst being set permanently at 4xAA.If those new 61.12's can sharpen up and stop the crawling effect at 4xAA then I'll be happy. I'd go to a higher resolution but my monitor won't go above 1024x768 sadly (15" TFT....can't afford a new and larger one at the moment!!).If there's a fix....someone did hint at one a while back here, but it never got posted, I'd be most grateful to hear it....Shame really, 'cause in other games, such as the original Unreal Tournament (still my favourite!), it looks and runs fabulously well in 4xAA....even better under 6xS.....!!!! Just what is this 'S' mode anyway??OK....I'll stop rambling....!! Thanks for any forthcoming advice/hints!!Cheers :)
June 3, 200422 yr I'm not aware of any image improvement... if anything, the crawling effect is getting worse, not better. My sense is that these drivers are optimized for performance. For me, with an ageing Ti4200 card, that is welcome news..Make sure your Mip Map level in FS9 is not above 4, to counteract the crawling effect.. Bert
June 3, 200422 yr Thanks...perhaps I'll give these drivers a miss then! Unless performance is significantly enhanced....The crawling I spoke of is not the scenery shimmer/crawl, but rather the crawling lines around aircraft and buildings as you move around...the AA just isn't fine enough to be barely noticable, which it is on the Radeon card; it's as the object is being AA 'processed' that you can see the AA crawling along the surfaces......most distracting! On distant objects it makes the whole picture kind if 'swim' around! I'll play a little more with the AF settings to see if that helps.
June 4, 200422 yr Just as a footnote...I went and did a bit more checking over at the Guru3d forums and found the section dedicated to the StarStorm drivers....I'd not heard of them before! Downloaded and tried the StarStorm 52.16XQ driver.I can now run at 4x AA with a much better image and a marked reduction in that 'crawling' AA effect....MUCH better :) Also, there's no performance hit noticable; steady 40fps (scenery/AI content dependant...!).Give 'em a try!!
June 4, 200422 yr Glad you found the drivers you like! The Starstorm drivers caused installation problems for me...I'm still very happy with the 61.12s and plan to stay with them for a while.. Bert
June 4, 200422 yr Allcott, if I'd known that they existed then maybe I would have done that search here...but as I mentioned, until I did a bit more poking around at Guru3d I'd not heard of them, not having been an Nvidia user for over a year and a half. I'm glad I did find them though :)Maybe I'll do that search here now to find out more specific info from users here...Thanks for the tip...Cheers
June 5, 200422 yr Well ain't that just a b****...!!!!LOL!! After further testing of those drivers, especially at large airports such as Heathrow Pro, I started noticing that textures were corrupting...just the odd one or two here and there, and then another would go, and another, and another!! A wierd criss-cross pattern would slide over the correct texture; covering AI and buildings....it almost looked as though the card was suffering under overheating. I dropped the core and memory clocks back a little, and tried FS9 again...same thing. Dropped the clocks all the way back to and below defaults...same problem.Uninstalled the StarStorm 52.16's and tried their 56.72's....problem gone, but these could not handle a 30 visability level...the nice blueish haze that extends smoothly out to the horizon got broken into that square texture pattern that can't seem to update fast enough ...... :(I put back the 60.85's (Nvidia) and all is well, though the image quality is not quite so good at 4xAA...it's acceptable though I guess, but good speed, and no graphical anomolies.
June 5, 200422 yr I would advise *serious* caution installing this driver. After installing it on my system, a large portion of my system's registry was damaged. Uninstalling the driver did not correct the problems, and System Restore has been unsuccessful. Again, I cannot stress enough...use with *extreme* caution. It's looking like a reformat/complete reinstall will be necessary.-Keith
