Bad new power supply?

Featured Replies

Hey all, I got the Xtasy 9600 XT 256MB 8x AGP card today for my PIII 500 machine (upgraded to a Tualatin 1.2), and has a 200W power supply and a Diamond Viper 770 Ultra 32.So I got a 300 watt "ATX" power supply and -nothing- happens. Not that anything is supposed to happen other than your machine turning on, which mine doesn't.I put ATX in quotes because it's the first I've heard the term and don't know what my current machine has. I'm thinking this may be the reason it isnt' working... but if it's just a bad supply, I'd be surprised, becase, man, they haven't perfected these things yet? ;)No problems with the original supply. Any thoughts? Thanks,Andrew

AT and ATX refer to the board "form Factor" and have differing PSU /board sockets and plugs. The most likely thing is that your new PSU isn't up to the job. Nowadays "cheap" PSUs are often sold as "xx" watts but in fact are capable of much less peak demand/supply . Your old 200w may well be actually better than the new.Really you need to be looking at minimum 400W in this day and age with at least 20A on the 12V line. That Video card is going to need a good supply.Yes I suppose there is a chance your new PSU is u/s.Does it(the PSU ) run at all?If it doesn';t wotk (no fan spinning etc) try disconnecting from the PC (all sockets) then short the green wire on the ATX (mainboard plug)on the PSU to a black wire(immediately adjacent) using a bent paper clip and plug it(the PSU ) in (Don't touch it during this - just to be on the safe side)- see if it runs at all(fans should spin)- if it doesn't then I guess you can conclude it's knackered.Try not to fry yourself while messing around with these things- electicity can kill!Dave

Hi Dave, and thanks for your help.I found out that the Dell I have uses a proprietary power supply.. yuck.So my alternative is to get an adapter cable, which, apparently, is something commonly done with old Dells.Unfortunately, it's only available online, or, at least, CompUSA doesn't know they have it.Hmm... How much is a new motherboard, anyway?!? ;)Andrew

"Hmm... How much is a new motherboard, anyway?!? ;)"These days not much more than a decent PSU- in fact I think I paid more for the PSU in my wife's PC than I did for her motherboard.Dave

My PSU cost 250$ so a new mainboard is cheap in comparison ;)
