August 22, 200421 yr Hey everyone!I'm going to be upgrading my system soon, and here is exactly what I'm looking at. Could someone just look it over and make sure everything will be compatible. I've never put together a system before either, so any tips anyone can provide would be great! Thanks, here it is:- Chieftec ATX Mid-Tower with 600 Watt Power Supply- Asus SK8N nVidia nForce3 Socket 940 ATX Motherboard with 8x AGP- AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 / 1152 kb / 1600 Mhz FSB / Socket 940- Thermaltake A1838 Silent Boost / Socket 940 / Ball bearing, copper case cooling fan- 1024 MB Ultra ECC Registered Dual Channel PC3200 DDR 400 Mhz- Western Digital 120 GB / 7200 RPM / 8 MB Buffer / ATA-100 / EIDE Hard Drive- Artec 52x24x52 CD-RW / 16x DVD- Creative Sound Blaster Augidy 2 Sound Card- eVGA geForce 6800 Ultra / 256 MB DDR3 / 8x AGP / Dual DVI / TV OutI'm really pumped about this system, but would it be better with a Radeon 9800XT? I don't think the Radeons are compatible with the new FX chips yet are they? I don't really want to have to use beta drivers to run it.Thanks a lot, and any advice anyone can give is very much appreciated. Thanks again!!
August 22, 200421 yr >with a Radeon 9800XT? I don't think the Radeons are compatible>with the new FX chips yet are they? :-hmmmNever heard such a thing ! FX (or no FX) has nothing to do with video card. But I would rather go with socket 939 - better memory performance and better upgradablity. August 22, 200421 yr Hey there!Take a look at the ATI site, the only drivers available for the 64-bit chips are beta ones, that's why I wasn't sure. Can you confirm this? Thanks!
August 22, 200421 yr >Hey there!>>Take a look at the ATI site, the only drivers available for>the 64-bit chips are beta ones,You are totally mixed up. People are using AMD 64 chips with ATI video cards today. One has nothing to do with the other. Go and look at prebuilt systems ... or systems by people on MSFS forum.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg Michael J.
August 22, 200421 yr Alright, excellent. That's great to know! I like ATI better than nVidia. Just one more question, when I go to the ATI site for drivers, I would just go to the Windows XP section, not the 64-bit section! Oh I think I just figured it out, they're talking about the Windows 64-bit Edition! Thanks!
August 22, 200421 yr I guess not many folks will be using a 940 mainboard for FS. Besides, ECC-RAM is much more expensive. IMHO, you'll likely be better off with a socket 754 or 939 mainboard. The dispaly adapter is adjustable to the resolution you require. Ohhh, with a 600W power supply, one person is definitely going to be delighted: The accountant of your local electricity company. Hehe. Good luck and kind regards Jaap
August 23, 200421 yr Hi there.I would recomend the AMD 64 FX53 939socket. It has dual channel ram I believe. I just purchased a system with and AMD 64 3500+ 939 socket and a ATI X800pro. This works fine for flightsim.HuggsKittiex:)~ This system is: AMD 64 3500+ 939 ASUS A8V Deluxe with wifi GCorsair TwinX1024 3200 XL Pro 2 36gig W.D. Raptor drives in Raid256 X800 ProWindow xp homeAntec True power 550wThermaltake Premier V5000A case
August 23, 200421 yr Works fine?? Bah! I think it works great!!!!! I have practically the same system as Kittie. :)
August 23, 200421 yr Hey guys! Thanks for all the replies. I think I've decided on the Asus A8V Socket 939 MoBo, but on Tigerdirect.ca, all they have is the Socket 940 FX-53 processor. Will these two work together, or do I have to try to track down a 939 FX-53? I'm also going to get the X800 256MB card. Thanks again for all the help!
August 23, 200421 yr http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-127-181&DEPA=1Forget Tiger direct. Newegg r0x0rz! I've gotten aLOT of stuff through Newegg and have nothing but good to say of them. :)
August 23, 200421 yr Hey thanks for the link. Is that site American? I live in Ontario, Canada and would need someone that can deliver to here. I'm looking a little more deeply into that power supply as well. Thanks!
August 23, 200421 yr I found www.ncix.com has more AMD S939 choices then tigerdirect, tigerdirect is a little slow right now with S939. And the benefit with S939 is dual channel RAM.
August 23, 200421 yr :( Appears Newegg doesn't." Does Newegg.com ship internationally?Newegg.com does not currently ship internationally. Presently we only deliver within the United States and Puerto Rico."Bummer - never really thought of Canada as international. :)
