September 1, 200421 yr I have heard that windows xp can only use 1 gig of memory but I have also heard it can use more does anybody know the true answer?
September 1, 200421 yr No the limit is 4 gig but then the 64-bit CPU:s will fix that problem offering virtually unlimited memory. I don
September 1, 200421 yr Author Wow thats great ! I just ordered a 1 gig ddr400 stick and will use it with another 512 stick of ddr400 with a total of 1536 mb of memory . I have heard from a company which I will not mendtion the name but I can tell you this they charge to set up and configure FS2004 .They are the ones that told me that 1024 mb was the max windows xp can use..Thank you for your reply! Great news to me!
September 2, 200421 yr Peak performance has nothing at all to do with "what windows XP can do" but rather what windows XP can do well. What was said to you by Fs-Gs which is the "service that charges to set up and configure Fs2004" is that you will have no performance gain whatsoever in Fs9 by installing more than a gig of memory. This was true when it was said to you and it is true now.No matter what you might be told peak efficiency in windows in conjunction with Fs9 is achieved at 1 gig.If Oqvst has any proof otherwise let him site examples of machines or of his clients who are using more than 1 Gig and tests which prove that more than 1 gig will enhance Fs performance. It seems as though Oqvst knows this since he runs only 1 Gig.Read his specs it doesn't look like he does this because he hasn't the funds to upgrade. September 2, 200421 yr It is an extra problem facing FS experts these days - ensuring the advice they give is actually understood by those reading it.As I understand it for FS use 1 gig of RAM seems the `sweet spot`. There is no gain to running more than one gig. But as there is no such thing as a `standard` setup FS 9, well not among the regular visitors to this forum I suppose, so there might be the occasional memory-intensive add-on app that might take XP beyond the 1 gig.Using FS9 + Active Sky + FS Force + this browser window open I see around 500 meg of RAM usage. FS Autostart can reduce this by some way. So unless there is some hideously designed piece of software out there that sucks the juice out of the available RAM I cannot think of anything that would get FS past 1024 meg of RAM usage. CAD/CAM work, video or audio editing is the only area where more (and more) RAM makes any difference.Save your money for a faster CPU or better graphics card.Allcott
September 2, 200421 yr Author Ok so 1 gig is the max .So would 1 gig on a single stick of ram be better then on two sticks?
September 2, 200421 yr No difference, except in cost and reliability - if you have two sticks and one fails, you still have the other. The quality of the RAM is more important than the quantity. My advice is stay away from `noname` brands. At work we recently had to replace all the RAM in a batch of computers after the purchasing department overruled the tech department on cost grounds and went and bought a `job lot` of RAM. Umpteen crashes later they are now looking VERY silly and the techies very smug (and you'll never see anything uglier than a smug techie, kind of like a bulldog chewing a wasp) :-blaAllcott
September 6, 200421 yr >Ok so 1 gig is the max .So would 1 gig on a single stick of>ram be better then on two sticks? You stated your question like you where asking if 1 Gb memory was the max Win xp could adress :). FS-GS is right you are very unlikely to see any improvement going over 1 gig if you don
