ATI 9800 pro craching in FS9

Featured Replies

HiIts crashing too often and I'm posting here before bringing it back tothe storeMy videocard = ATI Radeon 9800 pro 256-bit, using 4.8 CATAlways or often crashes mid-flight no apparrent reason.ESPECIALLY, maybe mostly, with add-on freeware ac such as the new Pilatus (with repaired [VC-05] section removed) and the CR700VPU recover maybe?Motherboard is only a P4S8X-X with P4-2,4 and 1G DDRAny similar experiences?Maybe the X800 pro is crash free regarding the VPU recover thingie which has been posted before...allen

Please better explain the "crash" you expereince. Tell us exactly what happens. Is the 9800 Pro new? If so, what VC were you using before? What PSU are you using? What are your system temps ?And, yes, by all means disable VPU Recover. It causes more crashes than it prevents.Greg

At any inorportune moment, sometimes on takeoff, sometimes approach. Never on cruise.Near Vancouver, MAYBE it is the new scenery updates, but it seems OK with the VC of the Lear45, which is smooth as cream.VC in Pilatus is where Im getting all the craskhes now.Card is new.No idea on temps.Going to try removing the new scenery.allen

"At any inorportune moment, sometimes on takeoff, sometimes approach. Never on cruise."But describe the crash. What does the computer do (CTD or hang with stuck video and repeating sounds or crash to reboot, etc.)?Also, did you build the computer or is it store bought? Thanks,Greg

It is a stuck screen with "repeating sounds". Happens at a moment when I'm changing views, or rapidly shifting view direction in 3D.Have to do a cold re-boot to stop those "crazy sounds"Anyway I deleted the northern Washington scenery addon I recently added and since I did one complete flight in the Pilatus to Victoria from Van.That scenery may have been in conflict with the eastVancouverIsland or Vancouver airport scenery, or BC09 mesh. The fps in 2D are considerably lower...thanks.,allen

I've heard that some Washington/Vancouver scenery may have conflicts, though I'm not fully informed about what's going on there. You should do a search in the main forum... there have been recent threads on the subject."It is a stuck screen with "repeating sounds"."This can be indicative of a video card issue. Did you recently change from nVidia to the ATi card? If so you should do a search for my handle in this forum (recent thread) for how to clean your system of errant drivers. If you did change from nVidia, I recommend you clean the system of ALL video drivers and then reinstall the CATs.You could also have an overheating issue with the 9800 Pro. To test, remove the left side cover of the computer and use a house fan to blow fresh air into the case. Go simming and see what happens. Finally, your power supply might be the problem. The 9800 Pro likes to see 350W or more, but more importantly is the quality of the power. A cheap power supply will cause premature aging... due to frustration!Hope this helps,Greg

My power supply has a reading of 450W max printed on its side (?) Installed last summer, mark/brand is ISO. The retailer said I was getting a 450W supply but I wonder, because the label on its side says a 'fuse rating is for 220W max', then the next line says 'max load of 450W', so is this not a 450W PS ?If the videocard is overheating I might as well return it. I did not enlist for a beta test. There are three+ fans in my unit, plus the CPU's and videocard's (tiny).I installed the ATI from a re-install on a re-formatted partition, No other boots around. There was an NVidia card there before, but the system was cleaned out as I say. There is an issue concerning VPU recover. It is a strange way of dealing with limitations. My system has crashed a few times outside of FS9. Not sure how, where, what...

The wattage of the power supply is important, but you also want to look at voltages being delivered to each rail. You can try Motherboard Monitor (Google). It will tell you alot about what's happening in your system, including various temps as well as what's happening with your PSU. MBM can be a bit of a challenge to set-up (because it can do so much) but it's a very handy diagnostic and monitoring tool.If you see a variation of more than 5% on any of the PSU rails it is operating out of spec. The 9800 Pro has a solid reputation and I'd be willing to bet that you have something going on in your particular system. The house fan test I mentioned will quite often yield useful info (it's not a solution, just a troubleshooting technique).Greg

I agreeI am downloading MBM as I write. My system has specs on PS of 3.3V,22A/ 5V,36A/ 12V,18AI was expecting about 10% more (?)But as the 3.3V + 5V rate at 220 it may be a 400 W PS (?)But I do have too many addons:TWO sound cards (ASIO-compliant for music creation and one DirectX for games)DVD drive CD RW120G 7200 rpm HDPCI dial up modem2 x 19" monitorsallen

the +12V is a bit "light" for my taste. I wouldn't want a PSU that delivers much less amperage that that (mine delivers 34A). It's worth a look to see what's happening while in sim.Greg

Well maybe I will bite the bullet and buy a better PS rather than return the ATI and go back to the FX5200 I had before, with never a crash. But I think the "house fan at the case" helped, doing a comparison soon.Temps with the fan were 36 max and usually at 36, fading rapidly wiothitn seconds to 25 with FS9 off. Played for 20 minutes (CYVR-CYYJ). pre-dawnish. Disconnected the 2nd monitor from the videocard before boot-up too. What am I looking for temp-wise? 50?allenPS THANKS for all the help your giving so graciously

I'd run with the fan in the case set-up for a few days to see what happens. Your temps are low (that's good) with the case side off... you might check them with the SIDE on as well, just to compare between the two states. 50C is OK... I don't like mine going above that, but that's just my "personal" threshold. What is MBM showing about the PSU? Also, check what MBM is showing you with numerous apps running (including FS). Load that PSU up and see what it does!Definately test some more with the fan. Gives you a good excuse to fly. :-) "PS THANKS for all the help your giving so graciously"No problem. I'm sure this problem can be sorted.GregEdit: Just remembered something I meant to include in the first paragragh here... you SHOULD test with the case side back on and no air from the house fan. Check temps then. If they shoot up (and they're very good now with the case side off and fan) that will tell us alot about how well your case is moving air.

When I removed the house fan, the temp went up to 36 (in FS9), and omnly one degree faster, maybe 37 when it crashed. re bootedPut the fan back, temp went to 36 again in FS9, mostly at 35, never crashed... ??Same temps almost...Voltages, 5 warnings about the 1.5 (3V) code 0. It went to 1.60, so?All other voltages within 5% but have a crossout of the bell icon.whereas bell icon for temps always clear.allenMaybe it is the videocard after all that may be defective? I checked its fan and it is running well.

"When I removed the house fan, the temp went up to 36 (in FS9), and omnly one degree faster, maybe 37 when it crashed. re booted"Hmmm... what were you doing (flying?) when it crashed? Also, what did you learn about the Vancouver scenery situation? Could the problem be a goofy AFCAD from an add-on scenery?I wouldn't think your system should crash with those temps, but I've seen stranger things. You should continue tesing with the house fan feeding the box cool air.1.6V is out of spec. That's probably why MBM gave you the alarm (bell icon). You can also configure MBM to give an audible alarm (for wayward temps, voltages, etc.) It's very configurable.Greg

Yes it crashed after departure on a turn towards YVR, at or near 36+ temp. which does not sound crash inducing. Is the 1.6V that much out of spec to cause a crash?I intend to persue the matter with addon scenery at Logan in KBOS where I know things dont go bump in the night (ha ha) (its bedtine here, or way past it) Then I would know about Van. It all started at Van...And teh fact that I got the new ATI before trying Van scenery out. So if it happens at Logan then it is my system. To try Van without addons is too easy on my videocard so may be misleading about the problem. How do I determine the Watts used, or the power load/consumption over time of my system? I would like to see some data on that is possible.I do not hear the alarms I simply log them, dont like the bells...allen
