Continual "crash to black screen" in FS9

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,The single 333MHz. DDR SDRAM of 1024MB from Kingston (Kingston Value Ram) works perfectly. Not a single crash since its installation. However, I have some other news regarding Asus's answer to my email to them regarding this "known issue" about my board and memory. ASUS asked me to ask my "memory manufacturer" (Kingston in my case) whether they do certification testing of the A7N8XE-DELUXE with their memory modules and whether or not Kingston builds their memory to the chipset manufacturer's specs (NVIDIA in my case). ASUS also mentioned "IC" specifications whose definition about which I'm honestly not sure and I haven't had time to investigate or look it up in an internet search. IN any case, Kingston, after a week-long delay, answered my email with NO to all the questions above!WHAT THIS MEANS (POSSIBLY): Corsair Micro (www.corsairmicro.com) clearly states in their website that they test their TwinX memory (and possibly other ones as well) with the ASUS A7N8X series boards with the NVidia NForce 2 Ultra 400 chipset... Kingston does not have any such statement on their website and their reply to me confirmed they do NOT test their memory as does Corsair with this board. Even though my single 1GB module is working and Kingston gave me exceptionally good service, I am losing performance (from 400MHz which my board supports, to 333MHz.) for the sake of stability. The slower memory was also recommended by Kingston as they said 400MHz. is also unstable compared to a single 333MHz. 1GB module due to the problem with this board and/or chipset (which is true I cannot say).I think going with Corsair for future systems is definitely what I'll be doing. If anyone else had experiences regarding the A7N8X- series boards, please let me know....for this is an important stability issue which did NOT just crash FS2004 (at in my case) but a completely different sports simulation game like the EA SPORTS UEFA EURO 2004... I will gradually do some more "Sherlock Holmes" work to find out about memory compatiblity and my board. This will help me (and anyone else) to understand how memory works better along with the issues raised by chipset, motherboard and memory design/manufacturer in 3D simulations and games.John

Hi Aaron,I'm curious regarding your mention of your ATI card as being the possible cause of your crashes. Have you found anything conclusive yet after doing your test scenarios?John

Checking in to see if there have been any further developments on this subject.I searched this topic as I have been having this black screen freeze for months. It started out only occasionaly but now the freqency has picked up to almost every session.I thought it was an addon software issue until I formatted, reinstalled FS9 and almost immediatley was stopped by the "black screen" I can get back to desktop with a Ctrl+Alt+del close progam command. One area of my problem that looks to be different is that I'm using an ASUS P4T533-c MB with a P4 3.06 chip. 1 gig ram. Thanks for any assistance that can be offered.Terry

This could be of some relavance for this thread:Last week I upgraded my system from:Albatron KX18D ProIIAMD 3000+ BartonATI 9800Pro video cardAudigy2 ZS sound card1gb Infinion PC3200 RAMANTEC 480W PSUTo:Asus A8V DeluxeAMD64 3500 VeniceATI 9800Pro video cardAudigy2 ZS sound card1gb Infinion PC3200 RAMANTEC 480W PSUAnd guess what? Despite running faultlessly in GTR, PCMark and Aquamark, I was getting black screens and re-boots in FS after about 10 mins run time.Tunned out to be the PSU from Antec. It was only supplying 11.39v on the 12v line, which appeared to be too little for the new CPU and mobo, especially as the new mobo uses, and needs, the extra 12v 4-pin plug, which the old mobo didn't.I fitted a new 550W PSU which supplies 12.14v on the 12v line,( under load too) and all my problems are gone.No more problems now after 2 days of testing for hours at a time.Food for thought.... Hope this helpsBestGrahame (EDHL)
