WinXP experts - how to fix desktop?

Featured Replies

I got a bad crash last night while trying to overclock my system. The display froze, got corrupted and I had to reboot. After rebooting I looked at the icons on my desktop and many of them were visibly changed - replaced by some white/green smear (for example my "FS Water"). Clicking on them worked fine - just the appearance was strange. After playing with them I managed to revive them to the original shape by using "change icon" option. But there is one item still wrong. I guess the typical symbol for shortcuts is the tiny curly black arrow in a white box. Well, on my system it got replaced by a strange looking "flag" - with white/green bands. How can I change it? Also I believe I used to have "shortcuts" without any symbology indicating it was a shortcut - now I can't do that.Other than that my system is working fine. Using restore did not fix the problem. I suspect the crash (or whatever it was) damaged some system icons, maybe something else (?).Any inputs welcome.Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

First thing I'd do is remove the video drivers, and then clean the system of them with DriverCleaner. Also, if you have ATI Tool installed it's best to remove it when you remove the drivers. ATI Tool still doesn't play well with the X800 series cards. Then reinstall the video drivers. If you want ATI Tool install it after checking things out to your satisfaction. DO NOT use ATI Tool to overclock your X800! It doesn't work with these cards yet.Wouldn't be a bad idea to check the disc: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/us...isk_logical.aspTo remove the arrows from the desktop icons:1. Open regedit2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile 3. Rename IsShortcut to AriochIsShortcut 4. Reboot your computerHope this helps,Greg

Greg,Most obliged. I can't wait to get home and try your recommendations. Please check on this thread very late today/tomorrow in case I have more questions ... ;-)Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

Greg,Neither running the disk error check nor uninstalling/installing ATI drivers did much. Your tip with the registry indeed removed this little beast. It truly shows your mastery in understanding the registry. I was hoping that perhaps changing this registry back to its original state would "reset" things but no, this little beast is back.A tip - when I boot in the safe mode - my icons including the shortcut symbols look perfect.Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

Hi Michael,Not sure I understand (happens alot in my world :-) ). Is the problem solved or returned? The registry hack simply gets rid of the little arrow... if you reverse the hack do things go back to being goofy?Did you use DriverCleaner? Do you have (or had) ATI Tool installed? Can you relate more info about how you were overclocking the card? Thanks,Greg

Greg,All is well. I am done with it. Yes, your registry tip removed the little beast but I still wanted it fixed withouth resorting to this trick (the offending thing was coming back when I changed the registry back). So this is what I did this time - I uninstalled the ATI drivers in the Safe Mode. Before I uinstalled them from WinXP. And I did it twice from the safe mode because I could see some more icons "coming back". Then I reinstalled the drivers and all is well. Yes, when I uninstall I use both - control panel/remove programs and the ATI uninstall utility. So being in the safe mode was the key to success.I learned my lesson - use ATI cleanup utility in the safe mode to maximize succes. For your info - I was not overclocking the card, I was overclocking the CPU using Abit's "normal", and "turbo" mode (idioten single button overclock method). Since then I found out on the Abit forum that it is bad idea to use those mods ... x(Again, many thanks, really I wouldn't have even guessed that I needed to reinstall the ATI drivers.Michael J.WinXP-Home,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8, Radeon X800 Pro,WD 36GB Raptor,1 GB PC3200 http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

Cool! Glad you got it squared away. Now that you've reintsalled the video drivers you might want to catch my "Monitor" post in Cruachan's sticky at the top of this forum. It'll help keep your shiny new registry in order.Be well,GregP.S. I remember my A7N8X had that same kind of utility included on it's CD. I installed the tweaker after I'd had the board a few weeks. My overclocking with it turned out the same way yours did. LOL

I guess that you overclock your memory? On my old Abit I had like "optimal", "turbo" and aggressive or something like that. It plays with the mem timing and can cause data corruption if set lower than your ram can handle at the speed :). I always manually set the values since these settings don

Hi Michael,Now that your system is back to reality, you might consider installing ATI Tool. It has some features that are quite useful:VC Temp monitoring in the Sys TrayConfigure fan speed (I have mine set at 100%)Set PCI Latency of VC (32 works just fine)These and other features can be found on the "Settings" page. Just don't scan for artifacts or overclock with ATI Tool at this time. Also, I've had problems trying to configure Profiles with the tool. Those features will do nothing but create nightmares for you.Greg
