November 25, 200421 yr Hi I am building the computer for the first time and my mother board has only one output for connecting a case fan. Wondering how do i connect multiple (at least two) case fans?thankssri
November 25, 200421 yr all my case fans are conected via piggyback conectors even though i have a couple of take offs on the Mobo, even the CPU fan takes its power from the PSU via reostat (it still has the sensor conected though). other than the noise (8 fans in total in my aluminium case) there is no problem. also i advise having the intake fans running through an air filter, you will not believe the amount of dust they will draw in otherwise, my filter collects loads of dust and pet (chinchilla) hair that would otherwise be blocking the internal fans causeing overheating problems.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/98881.jpg
November 25, 200421 yr I assume your case fans use the small 3-pin connector? If so, the best thing to do is probably to get a 3pin->4pin adapter and plug them into the 4-pin connectors that run from the power supply (same ones you plug into harddrives etc.). -
November 25, 200421 yr To avoid excessive drain on the PSU - I run several fans from a seperate (old) PSU bolted to the back of the desk - feeds to a molex connector inserted in a small slot cut in the rear of the PC case and thence to the fans. The only fans running direct from the main PSU are the CPU and GPU fans.Everything else ( 2 front bottom input , two side input, 2 rear top exhaust and one exhaust in the roof)run of the secondary PSU.Dave
November 26, 200421 yr "...my mother board has only one output for connecting a case fan"DO NOT drive your case fans off the motherboard. Connect the case fans directly to the PSU only. The only fans that should be plugged into your motherboard are the CPU and the chipset cooler (if your motherboard has the latter... some m/b's have only a heatsink on the chipset).Greg
November 30, 200421 yr Soyo DRAGON Motherboards have 2 headers made especially for case fans. I have two 80mm Coolermaster fans connected to the MB that have been running for three years (Non-Stop) at this point with no problem. As for piggybacking to the driver connectors, make sure and check the voltage with a multi-meter to insure that your not dropping below 12 volts on the red wire and 5 volts on the yellow wire or you'll have all kinds of errors that are going to be really hard to isolate. I wouldn't recommend anything less that a QUALITY 500w power supply. (Not the cheap junk that comes bundled with the case)
November 30, 200421 yr I would suggest you get a Rheobus fan controller or similar. Great to be able to turn them down or up as needed.Using on board is not recommended if you are overclocking anyway. Depending on how powerful your fans are of course. Now don
