January 16, 200521 yr I currently have 1GB of RAM and am thinking about dumping another 1GB in my computer as I think it will help with the running out of memory errors. Now the problem is I cannot find the same kind of RAM I currently am using. I currently have 2 sticks of 512MB Corsair PC3500-XMS DDR433 CL2 Extreme Memory with heat spreader. I cannot even locate this on the Corsair website. Anyone point me to a site with it? I looked at newegg.com and could not find any there either. Maybe the man with the answers (Greg a.k.a. Soarpics) might know? Eric
January 16, 200521 yr This stuff (currently not in stock at Newegg): http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-145-511&depa=0Kaching!!!And here: http://www.atacom.com/program/print_html_n..._DA&USER_ID=wwwKaching again!!!That ECC ain't cheap.Greg
January 17, 200521 yr 3500 isn't been made by Corsair anymore I don't believe. It'll be fairly hard to find some thanks to the BH-5 craze (These things overclock like anything :-hah)They're a tad on the expensive side thanks to that fact. January 19, 200521 yr Author Great! I was wondering why it was so hard to find this stuff. So now that I have two 512 sticks in here, I assume I cannot put for example 3200 in here could I? Eric
January 19, 200521 yr Hi Eric,"... assume I cannot put for example 3200 in here could I?"You can, but the system will then default to the speed of the slowest memory (3200).Just curious, what are your complete system specs and does it require that you use ECC memory?Cheers,Greg

Eric
January 19, 200521 yr Curious that Velocity Micro went with the ECC on your system... it's great for servers and the like but not at all cost effective for a gaming rig.If the computer is being used for server duties you might be wise to go with another Gig (or 512MB) of the original memory (from Atacom). But if it's not being used for server duties you should look at article. You couldn't go wrong replacing the ECC memory with any of the products in that comparison. They are all truly outstanding memory products. And the price would make it just about a wash.Your out-of-memory error is indeed perplexing. I can't help but feel that the problem lies within your OS (your computer is certainly no weakling). Wonder if you have tried [link:www.driverheaven.net/dforce/default.php]TuneXP. Go with version 1.5 (the new version will require the .NET Framework). It's an easy to use registry tweaker that incorporates many features that gamers like to do to their systems. In particular pay special attention to the "Memory and File System" section. TuneXp is easy to use and won't completely FUBAR your system should you make a change your computer doesn't like. And it's alot cheaper than buying more memory.Cheers,GregEdit: Should have added that TuneXP has an easy to use Help section. Very nice guide for making the right choices of tweaks for each user.
January 19, 200521 yr Author Greg,Since re-installing FS9.1 after my SP2 update, I have not had any out of memory errors. However, I want to assure myself of never having them by dumping another gig of RAM in the ole' box. I don't use this for any sort of server duties...just simming. I once again am sorry to sound daft but when you say, replacing ECC memory, do you mean just taking out the two sticks I have, then put in four new sticks at 512 apiece of a different kind of memory? I cannot just add two sticks in the slots I have now with the current memory I have now? Would I have to change motherboards because that is the last thing I want to do. I have never messed with hardware change outs in my computer before but it looks easy to just add memory into the slots. I just want something thats good, reliable and will give me 2GB or RAM for the system I mentioned above. Thanks again Greg for any help that you can provide in simplified terms for me. Eric
January 20, 200521 yr ECC memory is Error Checking Code which means it includes special circuitry for testing the accuracy of data as it passes in and out of memory. This is most desirable for server applications but is of little use to gamers. And it's expensive.Sadly, ECC (also referred to as Registered) memory cannot be mixed with non-ECC. You'd be lucky if your system even booted, and if it did the BIOS certainly wouldn't see one of the kinds of memory (ECC or non-ECC) you had installed.So... that's how your memory choice becomes a wash. If you can find a 512MB stick of your present memory it would probably cost close to 1GB of one of the memories I linked you to at the Madshrimp's site. Any of the memories in that article would be better than your present memory for a gaming computer.Sorry, Eric, but the memory they installed in your system wasn't the best choice with regard to price and gaming. I recommend that you try to sell it and then buy one of the choices from the Madshrimp article. Another advantage of doing so would be that the new memory overclocks like a rocket and you could possibly put off a system upgrade for a few months.Good luck,Greg
January 20, 200521 yr Author Ok Greg, got it..thanks. Just be clear, I can keep the current motherboard? Eric
January 20, 200521 yr "I can keep the current motherboard?"Yep, no problem with either type of memory on your current motherboard. You just can't mix the two different memory types.Greg
