May 7, 200521 yr Review of the ATI Radeon X800 XL 512MB card and some interesting details on whether you need 512MB of graphics RAM.http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/05/05/re...i_512mb_radeon/
May 7, 200521 yr The fact alone that they are introducing it in their mid-range card rather than the XT series is proof enough that it's just for marketing purposes for now. Also the 512MB XL is in the same price range as the XT cards now but it's much slower - even with twice the amount of RAM it's no faster than a regular XL.Not saying there won't be a time for 512MB videocards (640k of RAM ought to be enough for anyone right?) but that time is not now. Same thing happened with 128MB and 256MB cards to some extend but now the extra VRAM comes in handy (not really for FS though unless you use raw 32-bit textures a lot but certainly for Doom3, HL2 and other more visually advanced games than the mostly DX7-based FS engine). -
