July 16, 200520 yr I want to upgrade to an Athlon64-based system but don't want the hassle of having to reload everything. Is there a way I can do it? I currently use a socket A Athlon on a VIA based board. If I upgrade to an Athlon64 also using a VIA chipset, can I get away with not having to reload all of my programs? I just want to replace my MB and CPU and keep eveything else: my ATI 9800Pro, 80Gb harddrive (and current contents), sound card, 1Gb 3200 SDRAM, etc... I want to be able to drop it in and go. I think you know what I am saying. Can I do it, and will it work? Thanks,RH
July 16, 200520 yr It can be done but since you are replacing your MOBO a reinstall of XP would be wise, while it may work, there may a big performance hit. I highly recommend that if you do change, format and reload windows, it may be a pain but that insures the best performance.
July 16, 200520 yr I dont think it is possible. I have tried it but the Operating System does not ususally like such major hardware changes. You can minimse the amount of data lost by keeping it on other partitons but any programs will need to be reinstalled. This means reinstalling FS2004. You can then copy across most of the files from your old FS installation. Any add ons from the old FS inatalltion that require registry changes will need to be reinstalled.Anyway a new installation usually runs much better and is kind of theraputic!!
