August 6, 200520 yr I hope someone can help me, and I'll try to explain my problem so that it makes sense. It all started with my clicking on a link in the AVSIM forum (MSFS). That started it! My screen icons and resolution "exploded" in size so that no edges were present, and the mouse didn't work on anything. It almost looked like I went from a 32 bit high color res to about 2 bit washed out color. Things on the screen overlap, and nothing seems to work. Now this occurs intermittently, and almost always occurs when I click on the FS9 Icon to start a flight. If left alone, it seems to sometimes revert back to normal.I'm using a Dell 8250 Dimension, 2.8gig P4, 1024 RAM, Dell 1800 LCD Monitor, and Nvidia 6800GT OC card (256mg). I've uninstalled video drivers and re-installed various NVidia driver versions right down to the ones that came with the card, and right up to the very latest certified ones AND even BETA versions. I've pulled the video card out, unplugged it, waited, and re-installed it....the problem always comes back. Again, it's intermittent. It may occur when I click a link or a web page, or it may occur when I open a program from my desktop. I've change my wallpaper, and literally tried everything. I've posted to the Dell forum, but I've received no responses. Since it first started with a link in a message on the AVSIM forum, I thought I'd ask some of you here. I've downloaded the latest virus updates (Norton), and I've run de-frag and diskcheck, etc. Sorry for being so long here....please give me an idea that will help me solve this....Much appreciation in advance.
August 7, 200520 yr I know exactly what you are talking about,Stan.......when I had the 6800GT OC my desktop would randomly blow up to a size where you would need a 70 inch monitor to view it!!!! Mouse didn't work,no way to get the screen resolution back to normal.Forced to reboot, that was the only way to get it back! I think I went to the 76.44 or 76.45 drivers, that seemed to cure it.Give it a try......it is weird,I know....another Stan..
August 7, 200520 yr I've had similar problems with 6600GT. Forceware 77.76 (beta) seems to have solved this problem. I had the screen blow up (switch to ultra low res) when starting FS9, but would correct itself after completing the load. Same issues experienced when opening Java based apps (like ProjectX - Mpeg2 demux utility). I think this is what happened in your case. The web link must have loaded Java Runtime Environment.Keith
August 7, 200520 yr Moderator Ditto the problem with a 6800 TDh 256. Tried all sorts of drivers ands it still occurs occasionally. Simple workaround for me - hit CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the task manager - screen resets by itself - close TM - switch to FS9 and go along.Still don't know *why* it happens but the 'task manager' switch works for me.HTH,VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/images/asv_proud_supporter.jpg RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160
August 7, 200520 yr Author Keith, Stan and Vic,Thank you so much for your input. AVSIM people are the greatest. They've solved more problems for me and been more help to me than Dell, or other manufacturers. I downloaded the 77.76 Betas this morning, and will also download the 76.44's and the 76.45's. Seems I had all the others except these. I was actually on to the 80 versions. So far..........soooo good! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I clicked on FS9 and (knock on wood) NO BIG SCREEN. Maybe they don't conflict with the Java stuff I accidentally downloaded.Tell me, how do I get rid of the Java Runtime Environment files? I did a search but couldn't find anything with that name. I hope it keeps up....thanks again.
August 8, 200520 yr Hey Stan..........glad it's holding up for you. The Java runtime can be deleted via add/remove programs list. However,,you will probably need it again at certain websites. Stan
August 9, 200520 yr Author Stan, 3 days and counting and NOT A SINGLE INSTANCE of "screen explosion" as I call it. Thanks for the terrific heads up on the appropriate drivers. Most importantly, you and a few others here "nailed" the problem. That's most important....Java Runtime Environment works with some drivers...and doesn't work with others. Thanks.
