January 2, 200620 yr Hey all,Just wondering if changing my card from a Radeon 9800 Pro to a Nvidia 6600GT would be a worthwhile upgrade. My Radeon is nearing the end of it's life, I'm afraid, and I'm hoping to get comparable performance from a 6600GT, if not a little better performance. Thanks.
January 2, 200620 yr Are you running AGP or PCI-Expressmy guess you are running AGP. Why not upgrade to a pci-express motherboard if you wallet and hardware allows it? Brent Lewis
January 2, 200620 yr It wouldn't be an upgrade at all to be honest. They're about the same performance wise. Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
January 2, 200620 yr Have to disagree JT. I have a 9800 and now a 6800GT 256 and there is a noticeable difference in both the quality, clarity and fluidity of the display in FS9.for me personally - it wasnt a quantum leap but it does make the experience (with JT's painted 767's!!) a great deal better.I can run FS with AA and AF turned on (8xs and 8x) and now it runs smoothly.I am sure for more money you can better results but for me it was more an improvement in the quality.ScottDisregard everything I said - I misread the intended card to be a 6800.....JT is probably right then :(
January 2, 200620 yr From the original post: "Radeon 9800 Pro to a Nvidia 6600GT"I agree with John, not much difference between the two cards. Personally, in this sim I'd opt for the 9800 Pro because it has a 256 bit memory bus. Other than that the two cards perform very close to each other.Greg
January 2, 200620 yr I'd keep a hold of it a little longer and save a few more pennies. You can pick up a X800 Pro or 6800GT fairly well priced these days. This will provide a better boost in performance for your dollar. :) Cheers,John TavendaleTextures by Tavers - https://www.facebook.com/texturesbytavers
January 3, 200620 yr I used to have a 9800 Pro and upgraded to a 6600GT and I did notice an very welcome increase in performance. Right now, I probably wouldn't go for a 6600GT anymore and go right to the 6800 series.Pat
